Skylar's eyes go wide as they shift over to me and then back to Zack, and I can actually tell he's studying our faces to see if we're just messing with him.
"It's true." I finally admit, pulling my eyes away from his as I glance over to the carafe of wine sitting on a table. I'd down it right now if I were closer.
"Wait," Skylar's voice cracks a little, "you're actually serious." his expression still shrouded in disbelief, "you're a freaking Queen?"
"Trust me, I was just as surprised as you are right now." I shift in my chair and cross my legs, "but my status here is the least of your worries." I look over to Zack, "What about school? What about his parents? He can't go back, now."
Zack leans back in his chair and lets out a deep sigh, "Yeah, we need to figure a few things out," he runs his fingers through his hair, "the good thing is, Gideon has been already assigned as his Watchman. He should be safe," he pauses and looks directly at Skylar, "unless he goes to the cemetery."
"Who's Gideon? And, why can't I go to the..."
Zack clears his throat, interrupting him, "Gideon is one of our best Seraph Warriors and he's also been briefed on you and your family." he answers as Skylar's face drops a little.
"If you two tell me I'm some kind of freaking angel person too..." he doesn't finish and gets up, looking past me as he heads for the wine carafe and pours some into a crystal glass.
"No," Zack chimes in, "you're not, but you did try to find Katie at the cemetery."
Skylar's eyes go to me and then back to my brother as he takes a huge gulp, "Yeah, so?"
"Well, that's just it." Zack says, glancing at me before locking eyes with Skylar, "the cemetery is their portal, if you will," he pauses, like he's thinking of another way to put it, "it's the Demon's only way into our world."
Skylar is standing across from me and I reach out, staring at his glass of wine when he clues in and hands it to me. I take a quick drink as Zack smirks in my direction then looks back to Skylar, "You should also know that the Demons have tracked you...and they can smell your scent a mile away." he stops and his expression grows more serious, "So, no matter what happens, do not, I repeat, do not go anywhere near the cemetery."
Without a word, Skylar drops in the wingback, covering his face with his palms and then finally looks up at me, "What a mess. What a fucking mess."
I can practically feel the dread radiating from him as new needles ferociously poke at my gut, "I'm so sorry you have to be involved, Skylar. But, for your protection, I understand why Zack restored your memory. It was really the only way." I plead, trying to make the situation better but even I know my words are only making it worse.
Out of nowhere, three quick knocks on the door pull me out of my thoughts as I whip my head to see Victoria's face pop in view, "Hello your majesty," she walks in, automatically dropping into a deep bow, "I see we have a guest." she smiles at Skylar, "Should I show him to his quarters?"
I immediately look up and watch as Skylar shakes his head, "Holy shit," he smiles but it's not quite reaching his eyes, "I think I've heard it all, now."
