"Emily has nothing to do with why Victoria and I broke up!" he shouts, his new blue eyes becoming impossibly more intense.
"Oh really?" I say, allowing the sarcasm to drench my words, "you should probably explain that to Victoria since in her mind, you two never actually broke up."
"Wait, what did she tell you?" his tone pulled back a notch, like he's genuinely curious.
"That's just it, Zack, she doesn't tell me anything. I have to drag it out of her!"
"Kate," he leaves off the 'ie' part of my name, "what did she say?" his nostrils flare open again and I can tell he's getting upset. Or maybe he still has feelings for her?
"She told me that she was assigned your Follower and that you two spent a lot of time together," I lift one eyebrow and his face changes. He knows I know they were intimate.
"How could you, Zack? How could you break her heart?" I pause and shake my head, "for some strange woman you freaking Googled?"
"That's enough!" he shouts, stopping directly in front of me, "I cannot have you speaking about Emily in this way!"
Whoa...
"What the hell is going on with you, Zack?" I ask, shifting to cross my legs, "Did it ever occur to you that you might have been manipulated into bringing her here?"
"No!" he shouts, "that's impossible!"
"Is it?" I interrupt, "are you absolutely sure?" I get out as he turns and walks away, rubbing his jawline like he's reliving the past several months of his life.
A few seconds go by when I hear footsteps and turn to see Victoria pushing a rolling cart with our breakfast.
"Your Majesty," her face brightens up and she drops into a deep bow, glancing up at Zack as her expressionless eyes catch his. She suddenly looks away and back to me and smiles, "Here is your breakfast," she reaches over to the cart, placing two plates on the table, a carafe of coffee and a couple glasses of water before saying, "enjoy," giving me another quick curtsy before leaving the room.
My eyes instantly dart over to Zack as he watches Victoria leave, looking like he's just been sucker punched so I step over to the table, "shall we?" I ask, taking a seat when Zack finally blinks and shakes his head, pulling out the chair across from me.
I almost feel sorry for him. Victoria couldn't have done a better job giving him a "go to hell" look even if she had planned on it. Which, I seriously don't think she did. Maybe our talk made her think? Maybe she's realizing she deserves more?
"That was awkward," Zack whispers, pulling me out of my thoughts.
"What?" I decide not to let him off the hook, "the fact that she's still having to wait on you hand and foot while you're screwing around on her with some other chick?"
He drops his fork, allowing the startling sound to hang in the air before glaring his new blue eyes at me, "I am not going to allow this kind of talk from you!"
"Why, Zack? Because it's true? Because blowing off Victoria to date some doctor you found on the internet is what actually happened?" I take a breath, "She is in love you with, dammit!"
Zack's face drops, like this is news to him, "She told you that?" his voice so low it's almost a whisper.
I shake my head, "she didn't have to tell me that either."
