"Come again?" I get out, still a little in shock.
"They are planning to marry soon," Victoria repeats herself.
"Why the hell haven't I heard about this, this woman?" I pick up the tray of soup, setting it to the side as I yank the covers off me, "How long have they been seeing each other?"
Victoria instantly picks up the tray and sets it on the table she rolled in before looking back up, "Only a few months," she says, walking closer to me, "Turn around, your Majesty, I have already laid out your bed clothes."
Her fingers have already unzipped the back of my gown and I step out, wearing the same kind of slip I had on during the battle. My thoughts immediately return to the fallen Fighters and the sacrifice Dominic is taking because of their deaths. I shake my head because it's hard not to constantly think about them and the choices I made. Especially since I feel as responsible as Dominic. I need to do something about it, and soon. But until then, I want more information about doctor Emily Mansfield.
"Okay, so let me get this straight," I put my hand up, stopping her from handing me a set of pajamas, "Zack has been seeing this doctor chick for three months?" Victoria nods as she walks passed me, "So, why am I just now finding out about her?"
"I do not know, your Highness," she says, placing the now folded clothes on the upholstered bench at the foot of my bed, "their relationship started and progressed very quickly."
I don't want to grill her to death, but now I'm curious what was going on before then. So, I decide to just come right out and ask, "How long were you and Zack seeing each other?"
Her eyes dart to me as if she wasn't expecting my bluntness and I can tell she's contemplating how much to say, "When your brother first came here, he was frightened and confused, like you were." she pauses and looks away, "The Council assigned me to be his Follower and well..." her eyes come back to me, "We spent a lot of time together."
I don't say a word for a second because I think I know what she's trying to say but then I blurt out the question before I realize I even asked it, "Did you sleep with him?"
Her palms go to her face for a second but then she pulls them away and looks up to me and whispers, "Yes."
Well shit.
"Oh, Victoria," I get out before more questions pop in my head, "Wait, what happened? Did you two break up?"
"No. Well, not really," she stops for a second, "But when Doctor Mansfield was accepted into the Realm, our relationship ended very soon after."
"Wait a second, Emily's only been here for three months?"
"Yes," she tilts her head, "Why?"
"No reason, I just question anyone who hasn't been here for very long." I begin pacing back and forth, trying to get it all straight in my head, "How many new people have been accepted into the Realm? Do you know?"
Her face changes, like she's calculating the numbers in her head, "Only you, your brother," she bites her top lip, "your aunt and uncle and Doctor Mansfield." she says.
"So besides my family, she's the only new outsider?"
"Yes, I believe so."
Interesting...
Suddenly, I'm looking forward to seeing my brother for breakfast.
