~Third Person POV~
It was a hot summer day, the sun shining down with a glare. The cicadas chirped from the trees, filling the air with noise. It would have been unbearably hot had there not been a slight breeze every so often. There were clouds out and about, which drifted and covered the sun, providing momentary relief for the young couple working outside.
As they tended the fields, Rin hummed softly to herself while planting seeds. Len, who was turning the soil with a hoe, smiled as he listened to the song, feeling at ease. Looking up at the sky, he thanked the gods for giving him a loving and caring wife. With a smile, he turned back to work, when suddenly, he felt a searing sensation rip through his body, causing him to drop the hoe.
'Wha-What is...this?' He couldn't breathe and when he tried, an excruciating pain was all he felt. He coughed violently, a hand to his mouth to muffle the sound so that Rin wouldn't hear. He didn't want to worry her. However, Rin heard, and wiping some sweat that was dripping down her face, she turned around to look at Len.
"Len!" In a panic, she dropped the bowl of seeds and rushed to his side when she saw him hunched over in pain.
"Len...You're...There's blood!" When he heard her gasp, he looked dazedly down at his hand. There was blood staining his hand and it dripped onto the earth, staining it crimson. He would have fell if Rin hadn't been there to support him. She helped him into the house and eased him into his *futon. She grabbed a rag, wetting it, and wiped off the blood from his hand and mouth. She soaked a wash cloth and placed it on Len's forehead.
"Len, what happened?" She knew. She knew what was happening. She had overheard a conversation about a strange sickness that befall many people in the village one day. Tears ran down her cheeks as she took in his condition: weak, tired, and in agony.
"I-I...don't...know..." His voice was weak and he felt his eyes droop in exhaustion.
"I'll go make some tea. Please," Rin grasped his hand and held it to her chest," stay with me." (Don't die).
Len smiled weakly and laced his fingers with hers, squeezing gently.
"What are you saying? Of course I'll stay by your side. There's no where else that I'd rather be." (I'll try. I love you)
Rin gently laid Len down on the futon and went to make tea. She silently returned to his side to wait for the water to boil. She caressed his cheek as she thought of what to do.
'I have to get medicine for him.' She got up and went to where they kept their money. She counted it, trying to see if they had enough.
'No! We don't have enough! What do I do!? What do I do!?' She put the money away when she heard the kettle whistle and hurried and poured the tea.
'I could always get a job...' No. She knew she had to stay here incase something happened to Len. She didn't even want to think of what could happen.
She went back to Len's side, still thinking of what to do.
"Len."
"Hm...?"
"Your tea." He sat up with some assistance from Rin. He coughed slightly.
"T-Thanks." His voice was raspy and he couldn't hold the teacup, so Rin helped him hold the teacup while he drank. When he had finished, she laid him down again.
~Time skip~
It was nighttime. The moon shone faintly, a small sliver in the night sky. Stars dotted the sky, telling of ancient legends. Everything was asleep, not a single sound to be heard, even from the crickets.
There was one creature still up, sitting by her husband's side, watching him as he slept. Rin had finished tending the rest of the fields and had spent her time by her husband's side, thinking of how to earn money for Len's medicine.
She had come up with many ways, but she knew there was only one way. She leaned over and kissed Len on the forehead gently and got up and padded out of the room silently. She went to the room that Len had given her when she had first came here. Sliding open the doors, she headed to a chest in the corner of the room, opening it quietly and taking something out.
It was the white kimono she had worn when she had met Len. Slipping the kimono over her arms and the kimono she was wearing, she padded to a different part of the house. She slid open the door to one of the rooms and inside was an old loom. Sliding the door shut, Rin went to the loom and made sure it worked before she sat down.
She stared at the loom for a second, before she lifted up her right arm. A soft, white glow encircled her arm and when it faded, a wing had replaced it. Rin ghosted her fingers across the feathers, caressing them, before she stopped and plucked a feather. She gritted her teeth to contain the cry of pain as blood started to trickle out of the small wound, staining some of her feathers red.
Despite this, despite the pain, despite the importance of her wings, she continued plucking her feathers and weaving it into a shimmering, silky cloth, never once making a sound.
'I have to hurry. I have to hurry...' She continued weaving well into the night, never once stopping to rest.
'I'll save you. Even if it costs me my life, I'll save you. I won't let your life slip away.'
A/N: And done! That was depressing. Do you think I wrote this part good? I included some of Rin's thinking in this chapter. Let me know in the comments about what you think! Well, we're nearing the end of this story and I'm glad that you all have read my story and liked it. Please vote, comment, and follow! See you next time!
Futon-Are a traditional Japanese bedding. A futon is a padded mattress (shikifuton), a quilt (kakefuton), and a pillow filled with beans (makura). (Please correct me if I'm wrong).
