With him by my side though I knew I no longer had to face this all alone. He kissed me softly on the cheek, sending the girls waiting outside into a frenzy as the flashing lights soon subsided and we were left with the other four boys around us to wait, and wait, and wait.

(LIAM’S POV)

How could this be happening again? She had been doing so well; we had all been doing so well, and then she was gone again, ripped from my grasp in a cruel switch of fate. Harry was sat comforting the young girl while I couldn’t help but fall back into my usual pattern of pacing and asking every few minutes if there had been any advances. “I’m sorry Liam.” I didn’t even have to ask as I walked back over to the desk. The nurse looked tired and shook her head sadly, promising, yet again, to let me know if she heard anything.

“Thanks.” I mumbled half-heartedly as I sat down next to Louis in the hard plastic chairs of the all too familiar waiting room. “Lara?” As if in sync all six of our heads shot up at the sound of an unfamiliar doctor’s voice and when I looked over I saw him still in his operating wear, his hands fiddling with the mask wrung tightly in his strong grip. “Yes, uh that’s me.” The pale girl next to Harry spoke strongly and I remembered then that she had brought Nora in and would have obviously given her name so that she could be kept informed while she waited for us to get there. “How is she?”

 “Can we see her?”

“What about the baby?”

“What happened?”

“Will she be alright?” The stranger was bombarded with questions but I spent my time trying to read his expressionless face, searching for any clues to the outcome of her accident. He motioned then to the nervous intern at his side, who, then began, as usual, to give us the verdict of the surgery.

“There have been many cases for most women during their first pregnancy where fainting or collapsing due to the added stress on the body have been quite common. There have been hundreds of other cases of women passing out due to dehydration and over working themselves but…”

“But what?” Zayn spoke through gritted teeth and we all shared his annoyance at the naivety of this intern. Obviously he didn’t know what he was dealing with when it came to Nora and us. I paused and looked around for someone we might’ve known who could come to our aid but Dr Winston had long gone back to work and Dr Harvey was nowhere in sight. “But, as you very well know Miss Styles’ case is quite unique so,”

“Look buddy,” Niall’s condescending tone rang out through the eerie silence of the waiting room and the young doctor standing in front of us grew red with embarrassment. “Do you think you could go run off and find us someone who actually knows what they’re doing because yes, you moron, we obviously know that Nora, yes her name is Nora not Miss Styles you jackass. Nora is unique, and special and her case is very different okay we’ve heard it all before and we’ve all been here before so tell us what the fuck happened to Nora or else I’ll find me someone who will.” Usually one of us would have stepped in to stop Niall mid-way through his rant but we were all sick of waiting and dealing with people who didn’t know the urgency of her case. So we let him be and the intern shuffled his feet and motioned for his superior to come over so he didn’t have to deal with the five impatient guys whose best friend had moments earlier been lying, cut open, on an operating table.

The older man looked through the file and cleared his throat before finally giving us the news we had been waiting for, for so long. “We currently believe that the cause of the accident was dehydration and exhaustion but because of her previous history and some of the symptoms we are having a hard time figuring out exactly what happened to her. Your friend is doing as best as can be expected. She had a pretty bad fall but luckily she landed on her back so they don’t expect there to be too many complications with her pregnancy. It’s still too early to tell though and Dr Winston is yet to take a look at her and the baby.” My heart was pounding out of my chest and I hated how they dragged everything out like they were announcing the winner on a game show. I just needed to know that she and our baby were okay, that’s all I wanted to hear.
