Lukes POV

I rushed down the hallway sending up a silent prayer. This couldn't be happening, no it wasn't allowed to happen. My brain was on over drive. I texted Kelly that I was here. I stopped at a desk and the lady behind it turned around when she herd my voice. Her jaw dropped as she studdered. She never did get what she wanted to say out of her mouth. Kelly had ran up behind me. I turned around and pulled her in close. Her tear streaked face looked up at me and she burst into tears again. I ran my hand down her hair and whispered it would be okay. She pulled back as she finished sobbing and told me she was glad I was here. I looked up and by now we had an auidence. Several nurses and doctors were staring. I am guessing the receptionist spilled the beans on who was here.

"Where is she," I asked quietly.

"Come with me," she said as she pulled my hand down another long hallway to elevators.

I looked up at the directory as she pushed the 5th floor. I gulped as I realized that was the ICU. My head was spinning, I hadn't slept in over 24 hours and knew I was due for a shower but I didn't care. As we reached the big doors Kelly looked over at me.

"I don't know how this happened, I should have been with her, I shouldn't have had to found her like this."

"Its not your fault Kelly, she was just out for a ride."

We pushed through the doors into the large waiting room. She pointed over to a corner where a group of people were huddled. A nurse came up as we entered and told us only family was allowed on this floor when I herd another voice behind me

"These people are more like family then most brothers and sisters are to others,"

I turned around and a man grabbed my hand in a firm handshake. His face looked tired behind his beard

"Nice to meet you, I'm Beths dad, Burns"

"I'm sorry its like this," I replied

His tired shoulders slumped towards the ground as he shrugged, "Me too, she talked about you lots you know. She will be glad your here."

I nodded and asked if I could see her.

He looked back towards Kelly and nodded at her for her to take me. I put my arm around her shoulder. I really dwarfed her size. She turned and motioned for me to follow. We walked past several rooms watching Doctors and nurses scurring about busy with their jobs. We reached the end and I looked through the large glass window and gasped. There were machines beeping and tubes running everywhere. I could hardly see her for everything. I slowly made my way in still unsure of what to do. I made my way to her bedside and saw her free hand. Kelly hung back against the wall. I coundn't take my eyes off of her. Kelly was the first to speak since we got in the room and told me what had happened. Kelly had gone to Beths around 10 to try to catch up on the ride and when she went into the pasture she had found Dakota standing next to her horse still tacked up. She luckily had known where beth was going so she hoped on and rode as fast as she could to the ridge where she found Beth unconsious on the ground. The doctors had figured her horse had spooked and she had lost her balance and had been dragged for a while before she layed as a helpless heap on the ground. The doctos thought if she hadn't been wearing a helmet she would have been dead. Kelly said she needed some air. I nodded tears streaming down my face. Why hadn't I really told her how I felt. I grabbed her hand as a nurse walked in giving me a hopeful smile.

"Its okay to talk to her, she can hear you,"

"Thanks, hows she actually doing," I asked trying to hold the tears back again.

"We have her in an induced coma to allow her body to heal a bit. She has some internal bleeding and a broken pelvis. We arn't sure if there is any brain damage yet,"

I looked up with tears ready to pour again. She was busy pushing buttons on a machine and adjusting her breathing tube.

She gave me a smile, "You really like her don't you."

"Yeah, I just wish I had told her that."

"Well your welcome to stay as long as you want, but dont forget you need to keep care of yourself as well."

"Thanks," I said as she left the room. I pulled out my phone and texted my buddy Dierks. I had to thank him again. When I got the text from Kelly I had pretty much phoned her back and just rushed to the airport. I had called blake on the way and asked him to get my boat which I had just left tied to the dock and had dropped the trailer off the hitch. I made it to the airport in record time but I couldn't find any flights even close to where she was until the next afternoon. I called up my buddy Dierks who happens to have his pilots licence and he pretty much dropped everything for me and flew me up. I ran out of his plane right into a taxi. I hand't brought anything with me. I texted Blake and asked him to grab me some clothes and overnight them as well as my guitar. I wasn't going to leave her side until she was better. The minutes turned into hours as I sat there. I decided to lean back in the chair and I dozed off. I was awoken by Beths Parents. Her mom introduced herself as Lynn. I shook her hand but she pulled me up into a hug. I let my entire body relax. She rubbed my back and told me how much I ment to Beth. I was suprised she had told them about me. My last girlfriends either wanted to flaunt who I was to everyone or kept me a secret. They both sat down with me after they kissed Beth on her forehead. Her chest rose up and down as the machince pumped oxygen into her lungs. Her face was still quite black and blue after being dragged. Burns spoke up first and asked me about myself and where I grew up. They were farmers also so I seemed to fit in. I told them about growing up in Georgia and my own family. It was so refreshing to not be asked about stardom. Lynn asked me what got me started in music and I smiled as I talked about my love of writing and how it kind of exploded from there. They both told me about living in Canada and about their farm. I played with Beths fingers while we talked. Both Lynn and Burns looked at each other and smiled. Burns got up and excused himself. Lynn got up and moved a chair closer to myself. She patted my knee.

"Thanks for being here, I know Beth knows you are."

I looked up into her eyes, "I dont think I could be anywhere else. She is really something special."

Lynn nodded in agreement, "trust me I know shes special, shes the one that holds this family together when her brother is overseas. Please just treat her right, shes had a tough go. And I think you will, your parents raised you right."

"Thanks ma'am I will always treat her right. I'm still a country boy at heart."

She got up and patted my shoulder and smiled again. "I know you will, just follow your heart."

Burns walked back in at that moment and told me there was someone waiting outside on me. I got up giving her hand one last squeeze and followed him out while the nurse came in and busied herself. I followed him out to the doors of the ICU wondering who could be at the door. I pushed it open and stepped out. Blake and Dierks stood there with their arms outstreched. I fell into them mentally and physically exhausted. I didn't try to hold back my tears. They both hugged tight letting me let it all out. We all sat down in some chairs in a corner that seemed out of the way. They both had worried looks as I told them what happened. They told me how they decided to bring me all my stuff and come see how I was. I still couldn't believe how lucky I was that I had such great friends.
