Lukes POV
I stared out across the rolling hills watching a group of horses kick up their heels, leaning back against the door frame of the hay loft door. This reminded me so much of home and now I was beginning to miss it. I couldn't remember the last time I walked the feilds with my dad or sat in my mamas kitchen and snacked on cornbread watching her cook. I let my hands glid over my guitar strings not really paying any attention to what I was playing. I had left Beth in the house to get some rest after throwing a load of laundry in the washer and quickly sweeping the floors. I knew she would appreciate it. My mind raced with thoughts of how much I was falling for this girl and I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do. I wish my brother was still around, he would have known. There wasn't a day that went by that I didn't think about him. How our families lives would never be the same. The words started coming back to me. A song that I had been trying to write since Chris left us. I hadn't been able to come up with the correct wording until now. The fear of almost losing Beth had sparked what I needed. I closed my eyes as I let my voice drift into the hay loft. The scent of alfalfa tickled my nose and scratched at my throat.
"When I got the news today I didn't know what to say,
so I just hung up the phone.
I took a walk to clear my head and this is where the walking led,
I can't believe your really gone"
I opened up my eyes when I heard a bang that starttled me and my head automatically turned to the left to catch Beth at the hay loft entrance. I jumped up throwing my guitar to the side as she tripped. My 3 large steps caught her shoulders just as she managed to save herself from hitting the floor by grabbing a bale. She all of a sudden burst out into a fit of laughter. I pulled her in close and helped her upright and brushed her hair behind her ears. I shook my head I stared down in amazement of this girl. My heart started to beat faster and my palms were gettting sweaty. Even in sweat pants and a sweater this girl was turning me on. I swung her closer to me yet. She looked up into my eyes and bit her bottom lip before taking my hand and leading my over to wear I was sitting.
"Keep playing," She whispered as we both sat down on hay bales.
I watched her slowly lower herself, her face in pain as she grimanced. I could tell I must have had a look of worry across my face because when she looked up at me she chuckled and told me she was okay. I swollowed as I nodded. I wasn't sure I was ready for anyone to hear what I had so far but she meant so much to me that I decided I could. I took a slow, long breath and shut my eyes as I let it out and gathered my thoughts.
The words started to flow out of my mouth. My mind raced as it flashed back to the times that I had with Chris and I could feel my voice start to crack and break. I abrubtly stopped telling her thats all I had come up with so far. I looked up from staring down at my guitar and leaned in to brush a tear that had started to roll down her cheek. She twirled a piece of straw in her hands with her eyes adverted to her feet. I slowly traced my hand down her face and lifted her chin. Her blue eyes filled with sorrow as she knew what I had been singing about. Her lower lip quivered and I reached over and hugged her into my side.
"That was so beautiful Luke. I love it."
I wrapped her in tighter and lifted her up into my lap. She pulled her arms out and gave me a big hug before resting her head against my chest and letting out a big sigh. She pointed out the pasture and started telling me about her horses, pointing out Dakota telling me that was her personal horse. I don't really know anything about horses but I could tell he was a great one just by the way her face lit up when she described his personality and how much they had won together. She layed ontop of me and we talked about farming and how we had grown up. I was 6 years older but it didn't matter to either of us. My phone buzzed in my pocket and Beth turned back towards me as I reached into my pocket to grab it.
