For the rest of the journey nothing was said. The roaring purr of the cars engine filling the silence. As soon as we pulled up at Stannley's Diner, Jody pulled up next to us in her silver range rover. I opened the door and stepped out, pulling my coat closer to me as Jody stepped out of her car.
"You okay?" She asked, noticing immediately. I nodded furiously.
"Yeah, totally." I said, looking at Sam and Dean who stood patiently by the hood of the car. We all stood there for what seemed like way too long, the awkward silence dragging it out painfully.
"Shall we?" Jody finally said. Sam gestured to the door.
"Ladies first."
Walking into the small diner I was instantly overwhelmed by the smell of fried eggs and oily onions. My apatite was instantly replaced by nausea, the thought of eating anything making me internally gag. Breathing out harshly I clenched my jaw, not wanting to cause even more of a hassle and asking to leave I swallowed quickly a few times and held onto my stomach, not trusting that if I opened my mouth I wouldn't throw up.
"Hi, I'm Daisy, you're waitress. Table for four?" A high pitched voice said as a tall red headed waitress walked over and picked up four menus from a near by table.
"Yeah, thanks." Jody said, following her through the restaurant. Keeping my head focused ahead and my thoughts off food I tried desirably to swallow again. When that failed I put my other hand lightly on my mouth.
"Hey, are you ok?" Sam whispered from behind me, his hand touching my back. I nodded, dropping my hands by my sides. I gave a small smile as I slid into the booth that was, thankfully, far enough away from the kitchen to ease my queasiness enough for me to talk.
"The smell is just a little...intense. I'll be fine." I said to Sam as he slid in next to me. I silently cursed. If I was gunna hurl I wouldn't be able to get away easily.
"I'll be back in a few minutes to take your order." Daisy said as she laid the menus in front of each of us. Then with a smile, she was gone. Jody Sat opposite me and picked up her menu.
"Well, the burgers look good... double bacon cheese with lettuce, tomato and relish -" I swallowed, suddenly able to recognise the stench of onion rings. Greasy, slimy, oily onion rings. Looking around I located the bathroom just ahead of us if I needed it. Making sure to breathe through my mouth I returned my attention to the table.
"Oh! They have mac and cheese as a side, fries - or onion rings? Do you think we should get one for the table -" as Jody continued to talk excitedly about food I felt my stomach churn. Not now I thought as I shrugged off my coat. I looked up in time to see Deans expression turn from frowning to completely lost, his menu flying up to shield his face. I looked away quickly, my face feeling uncomfortably warm. I gazed at the menu, my eyes refusing to focus.
What was I thinking? Just telling a guy who knocked me up, who I barely knew, that he has a child out there and then say addíos? I might be ok with it but his face... his reaction... what if I've just ruined his life? I'd defiantly turned it upside down. Feeling my heart sink I put my head in my hands. Maybe I'd been expecting something from him. What? Like commitment? To play happy family's for the kids sake?
"Why didn't I just think this through?" I whispered to myself.
"You say something Hun?" Jody asked, her eyes pawing at the menu.
"No, no." I said, flipping the laminated piece of card over to the drinks side. I could have a ginger tea - that was supposed to help with nausea... I dropped the menu again, sighing.
"So Megan. Tell us about you, what's your story?" Sam asked, turning to me. I shrugged.
"I don't really have a story... Ummm... I was adapted. My mom, apparently, had me young so she couldn't keep me. I grew up in a very nice family. My real dad, Robert tracked me down when I was 15, saying he didn't want me to think he had abandoned me or didn't know about me. He was a hunter and he taught me everything I know - he wanted to keep me safe... We kept in contact for, well, the rest of his life. When he died I picked up hunting, he never liked me doing it but I dunno... I kidda feel closer to him when I do. That was about four years ago. I never could get him to fess up who my mom was though." I said, keeping my eye on the corner of the menu that I was bending backwards and forwards. When no one said anything I looked up to see there faces carful masks.
"I wouldn't say you don't have a story. I mean that's pretty... eventful." Sam said, his lips pulled up in a half smile and his eyes shining with sympathy.
"Oh no - it was great!" I said quickly.
"I had a good upbringing and I was lucky enough to have three parents, though my real dad insisted I didn't tell my parents that he found me. It was a closed adoption so..." I shrugged, looking at each of them in turn."What was he like? Your real dad?" Jody smiled half heartedly, her eyes suddenly seeming big and innocent.
"He was great. Funny. I think you would have liked him. Bobby would always -" I stopped when they all shifted uncomfortably in sync. I frowned.
"What?"
"Nothing... we just lost a really good friend on a hunt. His name was Bobby too. Bobby Singer." Sam said, fixing his hair that had fallen in from of his face. My breath caught, my body erupt with goosebumps.
"He was kind of our father. In a way. He looked after us after our dad died. He was a good hunter and the best man I knew." Dean said, his eyes locking on his brothers. I swallowed, my palms growing sweaty and my heart beating fast.
"T-That's him. You knew my dad?" I heard myself say. Everyone turned to stare at me. Deans eyes bulged.
"Bobby Singer was your father?" Sam asked, though it sounded more like a statement.
"How old are you?" Jody said quietly, her eyes intense.
"29." I answered automatically. Jody's face went paler, if that was possible.
"Excuse me for just a minute." She uttered, practically shoving Dean off the booth. He got up and let Jody take off towards the door. I watched her stiffly walk away, more than confused I turned back to the others.
"I don't get it - what did I say?"
"I don't know... I'll go see what's up." Sam said, getting up and catching up with Jody with two long strides.
"Are you okay?" I asked, Dean's face still full of shock. He turned to me shaking his head slightly, as if to clear it.
"Just... you are probably the only person in the world I was not supposed to sleep with." He said, his eyes somewhere in the distance. I bit my lip to keep from smiling. Deans face looked like he was a little boy who knew he had done something wrong, his cheeks and neck turning pink.
Jody came marching back, shortly followed by Sam. They both stood over the table, completely silent. Sighing shallowly Jody put her hands on the table.
"When I was 19 I met bobby. He was just rolling through town, on a case I guess. He... we..." she stopped, her head falling for a second before it snapped back up and she pushed herself to carry on.
"I got pregnant. I had the baby and then gave it up for adoption because my parents didn't want me to 'tarnish the family name.' They covered everything up - I couldn't get hold of the family that had my baby even if I wanted to." I just stared at her in disbelief.
"Megan you're my daughter." She whispered, tears touching her eyes.
