IT'S SATURDAY afternoon. No classes today, obviously. Just sitting on the couch while checking my social media accounts using my laptop. My newsfeed today is full of greetings, photos of couples, flowers, teddy bears and chocolates.

To many couples, today is a special day. To those who are single, it's their so-called 'independence day' but for me, it's just an ordinary day.

bzzzzz! bzzzzz!

Or so I thought.

Naramdaman ko ang vibration ng cellphone ko mula sa aking bulsa. Alam kong text ito mula kung kanino dahil kung tawag ay mas matagal ang pag vibrate. Inilabas ko ito mula sa bulsa at in-unlock para mabasa ko ang mensahe.

2:00 pm
Dad: Lorelei, don't forget your Ninong Val's birthday tonight. He's expecting you. I'm afraid I cannot attend so you can ask someone to be your date. By the way, happy Valentine's day!

Oh, I almost forgot it.

I didn't bother to reply his message. Instead, I dialed someone's number on my contacts. After several rings, he fin'ly picked up.

"Hey Lori, happy Valentine's day. What's up? Why did you call?" said someone from the other line.

"Al, are you free tonight?" I shyly aked.

"Oh, you want us to go out just like what other people do during this occation?"

"No, Al. I wanna ask you to accompany me on my Ninong's birthday tonight if it's okay with you."

I heard him sigh.
"Lori, as much as I want to but I can't 'cause I have a prior commitment tonight. I'm really sorry."

"Oh, don't be sorry. It's fine, Al. Thanks anyway."

"Happy Valentine's day again."

"Happy Valentine's day, too."

I sighed after the call has ended.

I guess I have no other choice but to ask him. Don't get me wrong. It's not that I don't want him to be my companion tonight. It's just that, I know he doesn't like to attend events like those.

Speaking of the angel, he just walked passed by me. I gathered all my guts and...

"H-hey Loki, are you going somewhere tonight?" He looked at me with his usual bored face.

"No." He said as he sat down on the couch across to mine.

"I-I just want to ask if you-

"You wanna ask me out on a date just like what other people do during this occasion?" He said nonchalantly. Oh, I just heard the same line a while ago.

God! Why do people think that i'm asking them out on a date when i'm just asking if they're free tonight? And why am I stuttering?

"Yes. I-I mean, no. Not really a date but I need a companion for I am attending my godfather's birthday tonight."

He looked at me with a serious face.
"You know what, I really don't want to be a substitute date."

"H-how did you kn- I mean what made you think that you're a substitute?" I asked curiously.

"Well, obviously, you would ask Alistair first because he is the closest guy to you." He has a point.

"You're right but unfortunately, he cannot go so I asked you instead." He laughed after hearing those.
