CHAPTER 5

“You look terrible Chas” Amelia commented unhelpfully. Staring at the right side of my head. The right side of my forehead had bruised quickly overnight leaving my with an swollen, inky black bruise on the side of my head, with a small cut underneath my eyebrow. 

“Mum went mental when she saw this! Not because I was hurt but because she thought it’d scar and ruin my career” I muttered sullenly. 

“Bummer” she mumbled slinging an arm round my neck. “Lets go get coffee” She exclaimed excitedly, as if coffee would solve everything. 

She hasn’t asked how it happened which I am completely grateful for. How do you explain that your dinner date basically pushed you to the floor because of his quick temper? 

“So.. Did you have fun with Jared last night?” Amelia asked cautiously.

I glance at her through my dark sunglasses, spying Jason hovering near. “yeah it was ok” I respond casually. 

It’s not like I don’t trust them or anything. As far as Jason knows I fell over when I got home and that’s the story I’m sticking to. I just think that they would over react of o was to tell them the real story. 

Amelia was unusually quiet today, so much so that its unnerving. 

“We better get to class” She declares suddenly pulling my arm toward the east building.

As I stand outside Mr Hunters class, I inhale deeply, calming my nerves.  I soo don’t want to face him today.

Reluctantly I push the door open, stepping timidly into the classroom. The students are seated watching Mr Hunter writing something on the board. His eyes briefly meet mine as I hurry toward my seat at the front, Jason taking his usual place at the back of the classroom. 

“Okay, Today we will be learning about the basics of law” he informs us tightly his eyes firmly placed on the back wall. “Please write the date and title and begin answering the questions” He takes a seat at his desk, pulling some paperwork toward him, he begins marking some books. 

Explain the meaning of Actus Reas and Mens Rea. 

What is wrong with him? I’m not his biggest fan but usually he is more easy going than this, he’s actually one of the most liked teachers in the school due to his laid back nature and apparent good looks. My pen lays untouched on the desk as I begin to lose myself in my thoughts. 

“Ms Taylor, Do you have a problem with the work set?” He asks loudly from his desk, jolting me out of my musings. 

“No, I was just .. Thinking” I respond lamely. 

“Convert those thoughts into words then please” He responds, a hint of amusement in his tone. 

His attention returns to the paperwork in front of him, a small smirk playing on his lips. 

I stare down at my blank piece of paper, I know what these words mean but I cant seem to explain them. I know that Actus Rea is the act of a crime.. Maybe like pushing someone to the ground and injuring them and a Mens rea which is the motive .. Maybe like trying to cover something up. I begin writing my loose thoughts as they enter my head for lack of anything else to do. 

“Pens down, lets debate” Mr Hunter announces, rising from his desk. “Who can tell me what Actus Rea is?” I glances around the room, picking on a random person “Jane?” He questions, keeping level eye contact with her. 

“It means the Act of a crime Mr Hunter” she responds nervously. 

“Well Done” He responds, looking around the room again, he spies Amelia “Amelia, What does Mens Rea mean?”
