*****************So, here I am standing outside the Hemsworth's residence because I want to return that twenty-dollar bill to Anna. Dad always tells me, 'Never let a girl pay when you are with her, doesn't matter it's a date or not. This is what gentlemen do, son!!!'. It's like '101 ways to be a gentleman with dad'. He always has something to preach about it.
What if, she closes the door on my face?? Well, no one has ever done that. I mean, who would want to close door on such a handsome face as mine.?? Ding ding, if your answer is No one, then you are absolutely correct.
I rang the doorbell and waited patiently. I start examining the house. It is a fairly large house, considering the fact that only Anna and her dad lives here. There is a small garden outside and I know that there is big backyard behind.
How do I know that?? Because I have been here many times before Mr. Davidson decided to sell it. He and his wife like throwing parties and barbeque in their backyard. There is even a pool there. I rang the doorbell again when no one answered.
This time, a woman in her mid-twenties opened the door. She has short blonde hairs which were pinned to the side. She is wearing denim jeans with a white shirt. There are freckles on her cheeks and has a small napkin in her hand.
"Yes, how can I help you, sir?" she asks me with a smile.
"Oh! I am here to meet Anna. Can you please call her. I am her friend from the school?" I asked stuffing my hand into my jeans pocket.
"Okay. Let me just call her. Please wait." She said and turned to proceed inside the house. Should I enter inside but she didn't say me to enter. Maybe I should just wait outside. Yeah! That's better.
I peeked inside the house. It has changed from the last time. Mr. and Mrs. Davidson like collecting antiques. So, the whole house was filled with things like expensive vases and statues but now those are gone.
I remember, once I was running inside the house when I was like ten years old, and I rammed into a table. There was a vase with Egyptian halo graphics printed on it. It was about to fall and crash into pieces but dad just saved it in time. Mrs. Davidson face was horror struck and turned pale. Suffice to say, I was never allowed inside the house again even when I turned sixteen. They couldn't trust me around their expensive artefacts. I was sent directly to the backyard. I chuckled, remembering the memory.
I heard the young lady saying, "Ma'am, there is someone asking for you at the door." Mam!! Maybe she is housekeeping lady. I got back in my position before they see I am prying on privacy.
I saw Anna coming to the door. I could see her eyes were puffy and red as if she was crying. When she saw me, she stopped in between. "Lily, I always tell you to ask the name first." She said to the lady, shaking her head.
"I am sorry mam, I will remember from next time. But he said that he is from your school." the lady said to Anna, whose name is Lily; now that I know.
"Yes, he is! Why don't you go and make some dinner before Dani- "Anna stopped and then looked at me. "I mean before dad comes home. Maybe some pasta is good with salad." She told Lily, who left to the kitchen
Anna turned towards me and came at the door. "Why are you here, Adam.? Look I am sorry for what I said. But you should go." She said looking to the ground and started to close the door ON MY FACE. This girl proves me wrong every time.
"Wait Anna." I said placing my hand before she could close the door. "What.??" She asked me looking irritated.
I took her hand in mine and she looked at me wide eyes. I placed the twenty-dollar bill in her hand which she left on the café's table. She looked between the money and me, before pushing it back towards me.
"Why are you giving me this? I like paying for my own stuff. It's not like we were on a date or something that you have to pay for me." She said pinching the bridge of her nose.
"I am doing what my father has always taught me to do, being gentleman." I said placing the money back in her hand.
"Are you trying to woo me here?" she said raising her eyebrow. She uses her that big brain, too much for my liking.
"No, why do you always have such kind of ideas? You use your brain too much. I told you my father taught me how to be a gentleman. I don't care if you consider that explanation or not." I said raising my voice a little. I was getting mad now.
"Well, I don't think that is true." She said folding her arms.
"Sorry, I got a little angry." I took a deep breath to calm myself. " Anna, let's start new." I said stretching my hand towards her.
"What do you mean?" She looks between my outstretched hand and then my face.
"Let's assume this is our first meeting. We have never met before. No thinking of me as an serial killer and I am not going to make any assumptions of you running away from me." I looked at her and between my hand gesturing her to shake it. She was hesitant at first but she finally gave in.
"Okay! Sounds something good." She said shaking my hand.
"So, do you normally keep your guests outside the house or is it something special for me?" I asked her.
"I think you have a 'different kind of party' to attend. If I remember." She said making air quotes with her fingers. Oh yeah! My pretty lame lie backfiring me. But if she will know I was lying and tells Sam about it, my life would turn into something that I won't like. She will not stop asking me reasons and wouldn't stop laughing at my pathetic lie. Let's just play along.
"Oh yeah! I have. I should get going. Bye!" I walked back to my car but before entering in it, I turned towards her.
"Hey Anna." I called her before she could close the door. "Don't forget to use the pool in the backyard" and then I sped away. I could see her opening and closing her mouth, deciding what to speak, in my rear view mirror. She must be wondering about how do I know it!!!
