"Can't sleep?"
"Fuck Lindsey you scared the life out of me!" I hissed as I whipped around from the counter where I'd been sipping a glass of water.
"Sorry, I was just coming down to make a sneaky hot chocolate."
"Without asking if I wanted one?"
"You were in bed, I didn't want to intrude."
"We've been married a long time, you've seen it all by now."
"What's that supposed to mean?" He smirked.
"There's nothing you'd be shocked by me doing behind closed doors." I immediately saw primitive urges spring into his eyes.
"Are you saying..."
"I'm saying make me a hot chocolate."
"Of course. I would do anything for you."
I tilted my head.
"Lindsey..." I smiled emotionally.
"One Buckingham special coming right up!"
He made the drinks while I moved to sit at the island, flipping through a magazine.
"The kids all asleep?"
"Uh huh, out like lights." He sniggered as he ripped open the bag of marshmallows.
"Are those the low fat ones?" I inquired suspiciously as I tried to squint at the label from across the room.
"Steph shut up." I scoffed and he just shook his head. I flipped the next page rather violently, scowling as he finally turned around with the filled mugs.
"My queen."
"I can't deal with your sarcasm at this time of night."
"You could at least say thank-you."
"Thank-you." I smirked.
"Good girl." I raised an eyebrow.
It didn't take us long to finish the drinks, and I began to yawn from the therapeutic effect of the warm beverage.
"Bedtime," I murmured, stepping out of my seat.
"Uh huh I'm exhausted."
"Me too."
"Then why couldn't sleep earlier huh, you feeling OK?"
"I...I was thinking about how bizarre it is that my husband is sleeping under the same roof as me but in a different room." I sighed.
"Well it doesn't have to be that way."
"You're sure?"
"I am."I pulled off my silky robe to slip under the covers in my lacy nightgown as Lindsey brushed his teeth. He flicked the lights off as he returned, and I felt him crawl into his side of the bed. I tried to relax but kept feeling him readjusting his weight.
"Linds what are you doing?!" I tapped his shoulder in the darkness.
"Just getting comfortable."
"Hmm."
A few more moments passed in silence but I knew he was still awake.
"Thanks for the surprise today, did I even thank you?"
"It's fine, it was good for all of us." He whispered in reply.
"Night Linds."
"Night Stevie."
Just as I began to feel myself slip into the world between wake and sleep, I heard his voice again.
"Love you babe."
I turned to snuggle against his pillow.
"I love you too."
