Work was going by so damn slow. It was so dead and I couldn't understand why our manager wasn't sending people home early. Not like I could leave early though, I had extra bills I had to pay now.
I was on my last hour of my shift, thankfully, when something excited decided to happen. Well, exciting is one way to put it. I was anxious and felt like someone had knocked the wind completely out of me.
Mr Way was in the restaurant.
Well shit.
My favourite teacher pretty much ever (much to Billie Joe's dismay) was here and I should have been ecstatic. But I was nervous. Scared. Shocked. All of the above.
He didn't seem to notice me. But then again, I was crouched down behind the counter staring at him.
"Melina, what the hell are you doing?" Susie, one of my favorite co-workers asked me as she looked down at me in amusement.
"Oh uh, y'know, inspecting the floor and stuff. They look so much better now that we've switched to Mr Clean" I mentally cringed. Who the hell says shit like that?
Susie just shook her head and laughed. "Well, whenever you're done with that, there's a man over there at table five that I need you to serve cause I'm going on break."
As she walked away, I muttered to myself "of course now you decide to go on break"
I got up from my hiding spot, washed my hands and tied my apron around my waist a bit tighter. My hands were shaky and I felt like I was going to pass out at any minute.
What the hell was I supposed to say? Just straight up: "hey there! Can I take your order?" Nah that won't work.
"Hey Mr Way!" No.
"Sup ma dude?" Okay, what the fuck? Hell no.
I was overthinking it again. It really shouldn't be this difficult. Come on Melina why are you like th-
"Well hello there, Melina"
God dammit.
"Hey, Mr Way" I smiled at him, trying not to look as uncomfortable as I felt.
"Oh please. Outside of school call me Gerard." he said, flipping through the menu.
Gerard.
Oh my.
Keep it together Melina.
"Uh, sure.... Gerard. Can I get you something to drink?"
"Just some water please," he smiled making me feel even more guilty. "so Melina how are things with you? Do you have time to sit and talk for bit?"
I glanced around the deserted restaurant and almost sighed. I didn't have it in me to blatantly lie to Mr Way so I nodded. "Yeah I have some time, I'll be right back." I didn't wait for his reply as I left.
I tried to get my breathing in order as I poured Gerard a glass of water. I felt my phone go off and I nearly spilled the whole entire glass. I grabbed my phone out of my pocket to see that Billie had texted me:
"Hey babe. Need me to pick you up from work? Also, can we have a movie night tonight? You can say no, but it's gonna make the fact that I built a blanket fort in your living room a little weird."
I nearly died of laughter right then and there. It baffled me how Billie Joe could calm me down and make me forget about my nerves by letting me know he built a blanket fort in my apartment.
"Hahahah oh my god, well now there is no way I can say no to a movie night with you ;) and yes please, I'm done in just under an hour."
"I was hoping that would win you over!! See you in a bit :)"
