Chapter 6

I went over to the lake as I had previously planned and sat on the white wooden swing that hung on a nearby tree. I gently swung my legs as a cool breeze blew through my hair. The sun was just beginning to set and the blue of the sky was slowly turning into a red glow. I let out a sigh as I lent my head against the rope of the swing, dreaming of a life that wasn’t mine, one that wasn’t duties this and duties that. It’s petty of me to be angry at the life I have, when I have a lot more than just a roof over my head and food to eat and from the outside it may look like a fairy-tale dream come true, but on the inside it’s a prison. I’m a bird locked in a cage, hoping to fly.

As I gazed out at the shimmering water I felt a presence behind me and I gently started to swing back and forth.

“This is my favourite part of the day.” Came a husky voice from behind.

“Hmm, mine too.” I whispered in reply.

I looked up at the ever disappearing sun and in silence we watched as it dipped below the trees, creating all shades of purples reds and oranges. Both in awe of the beauty, no one said a word.

It had been few weeks of school now and I finally seemed to draw a little less attention, though by little, I mean little. I knew my way round the huge building without the use of the map that caused me to look like a tourist, I had learnt my timetable and the only worrying subject I had to endure was of course PE. Not only was it a double but it was mixed. That meant not only was it boys and girls but it was also with the year above. Xavier’s year. Bella wasn’t even in that class to save me. As I was already running late from being held back in biology for an incident that wasn’t under my control, I barely had time to get changed into my sports kit. Once clad in the flattering banana yellow top and navy shorts I made my way to the track to find I was the last to arrive.

“Hurry up Miss Western we haven’t got all day!” Mrs Hawk squawked from across the field. A few sniggers were heard at my expense as my cheeks flamed red and I began to jog towards the rest of the group.

“Forget to wash your shirt?” came an amused whisper in my ear.

“Huh?” I whispered back over my shoulder.

“Your shirt, it’s inside out. Forget to wash it?” he snorted.

I gasped and looked down at myself sure enough to see the ‘wash at 40’ label sticking out.

“Oh crap.” I whisper shouted.

“Is there a problem?” or maybe just shouted. Mrs Hawk had now paused in her lecture of sport talk to see what the issue was.

“n-no…no problem. I stuttered trying to deter the attention away from me.
