Chapter 16

Xavier's POV

I watched the whole incident from beside the king and queen. Adonnia running into the room, tears in her eyes, her bumping into Lady Clarisse and then the whole mad cake scene. As she turned and fled up the stairs I saw Lord Agolt stand on her train effectively tripping her over, the embarrassment , pain and shame on her face made my heart swell and I wanted to punch lord Aglot for making it worse. Making a move to run after her the queen put a restraining hand on my arm stopping my attempts.

"Entertain the guests while I see to Lady Clarisse." She murmured through gritted teeth, her grasp on my arm almost painful.

I gave a curt nod even though I really wanted to check on Adonnia. Smooth talking the guests into forgetting what happened I made my way round them all, checking to see if they needed anything and asking if they were having a good time. Snarky comments made about Adonnia's 'accident' made me grit my teeth and gave me the urge to shove my fist into their face but I refrained,im pretty sure the prince wasn't meant to punch hi people, and moved on quickly.

Once the party was back in full swing I darted towards the staircase but was pulled back by someone grabbing my arm. I stifled a sigh, put a charming smile on my face and turned around ready to sweet talk my way out of a guest's life story. The smile was unnecessary though because on the other end of the arm was Lord Agolt, my eyes narrowed upon seeing him.

"Yes?" I said rather rudely.

"Now, now, now." He sneered. "That's no way to talk to a guest, is it?"

Ignoring his jibe, I demanded to know what he wanted.

"Quite the embarrassment that bride of yours, hey?" His slimy voice drawled out.

Anger flared within me and without further ado I grabbed him by his collar and pushed him into the shadows under the staircase. I shoved him roughly against the wall.

"How dare you speak about your princess like that!" I spat into his face. "And don't think I missed you tripping her up, you will be dealt with later, I warn you." Shoving him against the wall one final time I let go of the pathetic fool and made my way up the staircase.

I knocked on Adonnia's door. There was no reply.

"Adonnia?" I called out. Still no reply

Thinking 'oh what the hell' I entered her room to come face to face with....nothing. I walked in, glancing around, then checked the bathroom. She was nowhere to be seen. Re-entering the bedroom I noticed the heels sprawled on the floor and the open window. I went to the open window and glanced down.

"She wouldn't" I whispered to no-one. "She isn't that stupid is she?"

The ripped piece of white fabric on the grass wavering in the wind told me otherwise.

I sighed, obviously she is.

Running back out and down the stairs I entered the ball, I immediately scoured out the king and queen who were stood with my parents.

"Adonnia's gone, I haven't checked the rest of the palace but it looks like she has left the grounds." I informed the four of them.

"What?" her mother squeaked.

"What do you mean gone, gone where?" The king bellowed furiously.

Her mother sighed putting a hand over her face. "can this ball get any worse." I heard her mutter.

"I think I know where. I'll go get her sir, don't worry." With that I left the two dumfounded couples and jogged out into the crisp air towards the garages.
