John had nothing much planned for the weekend. Sometimes he would go to the coffee shop down the road and have a chat to the owner, Donna, who knew his order off by heart. Even when his coffee needed a double shot, if he looked tired enough.

But this weekend was different. This was the anniversary of the death of his family. Even though that memory was such a long time ago, it still felt recent in his mind, especially around that time of year.

School had been just as awful as it had ever been, all the people and mockery he had to endure was increasing. It even had begun to affect him, hearing the voices of his tormentors replay in his head like a broken record.

It was an early Saturday morning, on a day where the sun was hidden behind menacing grey clouds and a heavy frost in the air. John was cold and alone, so he thought he might head down to the coffee shop. It isn’t too far from his apartment, only a block down the road.

John locked up and left, walking quickly, wearing his favourite long trenchcoat to beat the cold. That trenchcoat had seen some times.

John had found himself immersed in thoughts, whilst subconsciously steering his way to the shop. He’d walked this path enough times to know which way to go, even without thinking about it.

Before he knew it, he’d made it to the shop’s wooden door. He opened it and heard the bell jingle as it opened like always. The shop was empty today, only a few people sat in the chairs scattered around the place

He approached the counter, only to see the top of Donna’s head.

Donna must have heard him approach, as she shot up from underneath the counter

“John! The usual, yes?” Donna asked

 “Yep” John replied, smiling.

“So, what’s been up with you then?” Donna asked him, as she was prepping the machine

“Nothing, really. That’s why I came here, there’s always something exciting happening” John joked

“Oi! You watch it!” Donna chuckled

John heard the doorbell ring behind him as someone entered the shop.

Oh my Goodness, she’s gorgeous, was the first thought which came to his mind when he saw her. She was vaguely familiar, she went to his school, he knew that much.

John stepped out of the way of the counter, to let her order. Donna seemed to know her quite well, even called her by her name, Rose.

 Rose, what a perfect name.

Rose went and sat down with her coffee, right near John. He wanted so badly to go up to her and talk, but he had no idea how to approach the matter. He wasn’t exactly the most sociable of people, as one could probably assume.

John had decided he’d best not go up to her, because it would probably trigger some sort of awkward event. John finished up his coffee before leaving back home.

He walked down the street again, and was halfway home when he realised his wallet was missing. I must have left it back at Donna’s, he thought, as he ran back to get it.

And standing on the corner, holding the wallet, was Rose.

John ran to her, puffed by the time he reached her on the corner.

“Thanks, I just realized I left it back there” John laughed

“Yeah, probably not great leaving your wallet in a public place”, Rose responded, “hey, don’t you go to my school?” Rose had recognized him!

 “Um, yeah” John said awkwardly

“Hope to see you around! Bye!” Rose yelled to him as she walked back inside the shop

“You too!” He yelled back, smiling as big as he could ever remember.

HEY GUYS!
