I’ll be the first to admit I’m not very good at four wheeling.
But that doesn’t mean I appreciate it when Matt laughs at me while I’m having trouble starting it. Luckily, Niall manages to hide his amusement for my sake, and starts it for me. Meanwhile, I mutter about how it was defective but I was quickly shut up once it roared to life.
This is why Niall drives me places.
He easily got his going, and we were soon on our way towards the back of the property. Out back, there are acres upon acres of conservation. We aren’t technically allowed out here. And if you really want to look into things, us being out is slightly illegal.
Eh.
I’ve taken Maverick on countless trail rides out here before, Niall and I have taken little nature trails (which mostly end in us making out), and of course we take our lovely four wheelers out there.
At first, it’s just forest. You have to go slowly, since there are so many trees and it’s hard to navigate otherwise. I would be lying if I said I’ve never had a close encounter with a tree.
Looking back, it was funny as well. But at the at time, I had no idea how to drive a four wheeler and I had been petrified. It didn’t help that Niall was laughing at me. Ah, the first few weeks of our relationship were so awkward. I was afraid of him thinking I was stupid.
Now it’s a contest to see who does more stupid things. Personally, I think Niall does more stupid things. And of course he thinks the exact opposite.
Then there’s a reasonably sized dip, and at the bottom a small little river flows through. It’s so small though, it’s not even a river, making a creek? After a big rain storm, it actually fills up pretty decently and it’s fun to take the horses it in.
Since it’s summer, the creek was fairly full, but nothing the four wheelers couldn’t handle. Niall and I managed to get through it without any problems.
Once you get past the creek, there are some more trees, and then a completely open field right ahead. If you continue going left or right, there is only more forest. And we weren’t looking to run into any trees anytime soon, so we went for the field.
Niall came to a stop, right at the edge of the forest and the field. I came up next to him. I wish I could say it was picturesque. But then I would be lying to you.
The field isn’t empty, and actually has multiple power lines right down the middle. It’s an expansive field, so even with that we have more room than we know what to do with. The grass was hardly ever grass. It was more of a mixture of grass and sand at this point.
I looked at Niall to find that he was looking back at me.
“I’ll race you to the third pole,” I challenged. Revving the engine just to prove my point.
A cheeky grin lit up his face. “Fine. I’ll even give you a head start.”
“Aw, you’re sweet, babe. But I don’t need it.”
“You suck at four wheeling. I’ll give you ten seconds to get as far as you can.”
I made a face at him. “I hate you.”
