I looked at Ruby's text:

'Well?????'

Me:

'What?'

Ruby:

'Well did he answer you yet??'

Me:

'Who?'

'OMG!!!! Jason!!! Did he answer you about the emergency meeting you asked for.'

I paused. I stood up straight and stared at the cupboard door. Emergency meeting? Shit! I forgot all about that already. That's what his text was for. Son of a bitch!

Me:

'Ya. He said tomorrow cuz there's no band rep today.'

Ruby:

'Okay. That's good. He's set up a date right away. What time?'

Me:

'I don't know. I didn't ask yet.'

Ruby:

'Why not??'

'Cuz I forgot why I text him and I didn't know what he was talking about.'

'OMFG SAM!!!!! Don't you want your kids to come home??'

Me:

'Fuck you Ruby!! I'm going through a lot of stress and bullshit right now. A little patience and understanding wouldn't fucking hurt!'

Ruby:

'Well either you want your kids to come home or not. If you want them home then start paying attention. If you don't want them home then stop what you're doing. You can stay home and sulk in your pity pot all day with Brad. Lazing around in your bed.'

Me:

'Fuck off Ruby. You have anything positive to say? Or are you texting me to make me feel more like shit? If that's what you want to do then you can shove your phone up your ass and shut the fuck up!! Otherwise, if you're going to be productive then start talking to me!'

I exited out of Ruby's messege window and opened Jason's.

Me:

'What time tomorrow?'

Jason:

'Afternoon. Anytime.'

I went back to Ruby's texts.

Me:

'He says anytime tomorrow afternoon.'

Ruby:

'Make it 2 so I can be there.'

I went back to Jason's texts.

Me:

'2 work for you?'

"Excuse me, teacher?" A small voice broke through my frustration.

I spun around and found a husky four year old standing behind the line on the floor, looking at me with wide eyes.

"My name's Samantha. Yes?" I answered, smiling.

"Can I have some corn flakes?"

"Of course you can." I said. I put my phone down and walked over to the dishwasher. "Sorry. I shouldn't have left that open." I closed the dishwasher door and grabbed the container with corn flakes.

"No. I don't want that one." The boy said.

I stopped. "Oh. Well, you said you wanted corn flakes. This is corn flakes." I showed him the cereal.
