Five years ago...
Stealthily Dean began to approach the house. He stood by the middle of the porch, listening. He couldn't hear anything, so Castiel was probably asleep. He quietly opened the door. Yup, the house was a quiet as a mouse. He sniffed his hand and under his arms to make sure he didn't smell like rotting vampire corpse.
All the lights were off except for the hallway dimly light upstairs, which he could see from the bottom of the staircase. He tried making his steps more gentle since the stairs were sensitive and made loud creaking noises.
Once he found the door to he and Castiel's bedroom, he quietly made his way inside. Instead of the form of a peacefully sleeping Cas, the silhouette of his fiancé was sitting with his back facing Dean. Damn it, he was busted. Dean froze in his place.
"Hello Dean." Castiel greeted him calmly. Like he was expecting him. Now he was really glad he decided to wash up at Sam's before coming home, or he wouldn't know how to explain why he was lathered in vampire blood.
Dean flipped the light switch on but Castiel didn't turn around. "Heya...uh sorry I came late." Wow could his apology be any lamer?
"Where were you?"
"Well I was doing a late workout at the gym and lost track of-"
Castiel swiftly turned around and stared intensely at the Dean. "Don't you dare make up another excuse. The gym closed two hours ago, I'm not as stupid as you think." he interrupted.
"You're not stupid Cas. I-"
"You what Dean? You lost track of time again? You were with Sam? Will you ever tell me the truth? Questions that may never be answered! Somethings been going on with you and in my mind I'm making up all these possibilities and most of them aren't pleasant." The pitch in his voice increased higher, something that Cas rarely did. Dean wanted to say something, but what could he say? Castiel wasn't stupid, obviously, he was prone to catch on eventually.
Castiel lowered his head. His eyes were already beginning to fill with moisture and he didn't want Dean to see how pathetic he was. "Are you...are you cheating on me?" The man whispered. He sounded so heartbroken that all Dean wanted to do was gather him in his arms and clutch him tightly forever. How could he even think that? "Cas hell no. I could never do something like that. I'm a douche but I'm not that a douche." He replied quickly while attempting to lighten the mood, but Castiel didn't do as much as snicker.
Castiel stood up and Dean walked closer to him. He shook off any tears and faced Dean in the eye. "This isn't funny Dean. You've been doing this for a while and I waved it off as nothing for too long. The coming home late, sneaking off into the middle of the night-yes I was pretending to sleep- and so many other notes of 'sketchy' behavior. Did I do something wrong Dean? Please just tell me. I can't keep living like this." Now he was already past the verge of tears and salty waterfalls poured down his face. He couldn't care less at this point.
Dean was now in front of Cas, almost nose to nose that if he leaned in enough their lips would touch. He hated seeing Cas so sad and depressed, even worse that he was the reason for it. Throughout their relationship, all Dean ever wanted for Cas was for him to be happy. He thought he was protecting him by not telling him about his hunting. Maybe part of that reason was because he didn't want to scare him off, or disgust him.
Dean wrapped his arms around Castiel, but the black-haired man pushed him away. He took a couple minutes to relax himself and stopped heavily crying. He sniffled. "Tell me. The truth. I can't be in a relationship if all you do is lie."
Dean averted his eyes to the floor and then back up at Cas. "You really want to know?"
Cas nodded and sniffled again. Dean took a deep breath and sat on the bed where Castiel was previously sitting. "There's something I've been keeping from you. It's kinda big. Please don't get mad when I say this, I've avoided trying to tell you for so long but for the sake of our relationship here goes..." Dean then on explained how Sam and him were hunters, and have been since they were young. He explained all about the supernatural beings lingering around the world that threatened human existence.
Castiel raised an eyebrow at the end of Dean's explanation. "Uh huh. So you and Sam are monster hunters?" Dean nodded. "Right, so your like ghostbusters?" Cas asked with an obvious disbelieving tone. Who could blame him, Dean practically screamed crazy with all the nonsense Cas wouldn't seem to understand.
"I'm telling the truth." Castiel huffed dryly before laughing. It wasn't one of his kindhearted laughs either. "Wow this is amazing. You, Dean Winchester, are a real life ghostbuster who wait-not only fights and disposes ghosts but also demons, wendigos, and other folklore creatures? Dean who is afraid of heights let alone fights supernatural beings?"
Castiel was laughing darkly again. and Dean knew for certain that Cas didn't believe a single word he said. "I'm not lying about this Castiel." Dean assured softly. Castiel's look softened a little, but he was still mad.
"How long?"
"How long what?"
"How long were you going to keep this from me?" Castiel asked tentatively. Castiel glanced at him for a second before keeping his gaze on the wall behind him. "Say I did even believe you, this doesn't change the fact that you've been hiding this from me our entire relationship. Dean, we are supposed to trust each other and be able to tell each other everything. It's called having a healthy relationship. Your life seems to be based on 'hunting' yet you didn't have the decency to inform me about it." The waterworks were back as liquid filled the corners of Castiel's eyes and glossed his eyes. Dean wanted to reach out to his boyfriend and just protectively hug him until he was happy again but this was a lot to process. Dean always imagined the day he would tell Castiel about his so called 'profession'. He never imagined tears and heartbreak. Not that it would be the easiest moment, but he thought Cas would take the news lightly. Clearly he underestimated his angel.
"Please just go..."
"Cas-"
"PLEASE!" Castiel yelled. Startled, Dean nodded and took his sleepwear from his dresser before heading to the bathroom. He would be sleeping on the couch. He'd rather sleep in their bed cuddling with Cas, but he knew his boyfriend needed some space.
