It was a week from the night we had decided on the plan. The trail we had been moving along, had gotten continuously worse until it was a goat trail ridden with rocks and stumps. Everyone was very frail and weak.
The straps from the wagon, had been wearing away at my fur and left raw skin exposed. It was the night before we would finally escape, and the rest of the pack had been informed about it and I think that's what had kept most of them going the last few days.
Master and the soldiers who were supposed to be standing guard, had all gone to sleep.
I had sent the 7 youngest and weakest members packs back down the trail with a few other members. Their instructions were to take them back a few miles to dump them in a valley.
Our plan was to sneak the 7 youngest out of camp undetected before morning. They would go 5 miles into the bush to the south, hide, and wait for someone to come and get them. I was sending Thorn with them. Thorn is a 15 year old, sandy coloured she wolf.
Thorn and the kids snuck out through the back and we watched as they disappeared into the darkness of the trees. We went back inside the tents and sat down to wait. It was up to them now. The members disposing of the bags came back and we waited some more.
"We're clear and still on the move... No worries on this end." Said Thorn to the pack through the mind link.
With a wave of relief, we all settled down for the night.
When morning came, everyone was very excited for the day to began, knowing that there was a huge possibility that we could be free by lunch.
A few soldiers came and made sure our bags were on.
"There seems to be a few bags missing." Stated one of the soldiers. It bothered me how he didn't care about what had happened to the people who had been carrying them.
"Lydia has them in her wagon, she didn't want to strain the younger wolves." Came Jake's reply.
The soldier rolled his eyes and moved up to the very front of the procession with the rest of the soldiers, muttering something about stupid wolves.
The group of us started to move and I could see the wolves looking around at their friends with excitement and lots of them reviewing the plan over and over again in their heads. It made me proud to see how strong we were banded together.
"Remember that you have to make your move before we get 5 miles up the trail, because that is where the kids are hiding." I directed at Jake through the mind link.
"I know, there is a hill up ahead and at the base of it, I'm going, I'll tell you when." Said Jake.
"Wait for Jake's command, and then move as fast as you can! Take your clothes bags and run. DON'T LOOK BACK FOR ANYTHING.... Don't wait, help each other! This is our one chance for survival!" I shouted to the pack through the link, who all grew giddy with nerves.
A few more minutes passed, and then we heard it. "NOW" said Jakes voice.
Everyone sprang into action. The humans at the back all dropped their bags and ran up to pull the bags off of the wolves.
Jake's knife that he had, was passed down through the scrambling wolves and a few humans ran to cut Nate and I free. Nate was free of the straps first and he took off up towards the front towards Jake, no-doubt. I was finally cut loose, and told the remaining pack members to run up through the bush to Thorn and wait there.
Once everyone had disappeared into the brush, I ran up to the front, where I saw Jake, hobbling around on 3 legs, bleeding from different wounds, fighting through the soldiers, and Nate following close behind taking down sometimes 2 at a time. Together they were finishing the mass of soldiers.
I looked around wildly until I spotted the Master trying to scramble up the steep hill. I took off after him and pushed myself to reach him quickly. I scrabbled through the loose dirt up the hill and lunged at him.
I took him down swiftly and had pinned him down. I then turned my head down to see that Nate and Jake had killed all of the soldiers. I whipped around at Master.
"Please, I swear, I would never do something like this to you of free will, I was delusional, I forgot myself for a little while, please, spare me and I will never come near you or your pack again." He whimpered.
I rolled my lip up and growled, my wolf was not happy to hear him beg. He didn't even have enough dignity to die truthful.
I bit down on his neck until I heard the satisfying crunch.
I ran down to Nate and Jake. Nate had escaped with a few scratches, but Jake was bleeding as he had been the one to in combat the longest because he was the distraction.
Jake insisted that he was fine, and we all knew that his wolf healing powers would take over and the cuts would heal in a little while, so we started through the bush following the scent trails of the ones before us.
We were slow at the start, but Jake was soon completely healed and we began to pick up the pace to a jog, because my wolf wanted nothing more than to get to the rest of her pack.
We burst through the undergrowth into a small clearing where everyone had huddled and they all let out cheers! They were all in human form and wearing their clothes that they had had on when we were first taken.
"The poison we were given to keep us in one of the 2 forms wore off a little while ago." Explained Timber.
Someone had grabbed my clothes bag so I picked it up in my mouth and moved behind a bush, and shifted. My bones felt tingly because I hadn't been in human form for a while. I quickly changed into my dirty tank top, camo pants, and combat boots, tied my hair on top of my head and walked out.
Nate and Jake had also gotten their bags and changed.
I went and took a seat on the ground with a bunch of the little ones. I learned that everyone had gotten away safely and everyone helped each other, and some stopped to grab things.
They had stolen 3 bags of sandwiches and were passing those around now, and Timber stole a bag loaded full of money.
I was overall really proud of everyone and since we had killed the Master on escape, it was almost certain we wouldn't be tracked down, and if we were, they wouldn't find us.
"So now what?" Thorn wanted to know.
I looked around at everyone looking back at me with curious eyes. I smiled.
"Now, we find our new lives."
