Almost One Year Later....
Niall:
I opened the door, smiling as my eyes landed on our group of friends. "Hey, c'mon in."
They all shuffled in, standing awkwardly in our mudroom, trying to avoid stepping on the random objects piled throughout the room. "Sorry, I chuckled, trying to shove some of the junk against the wall. "Renovations have been slow."
"Mhmm. I can tell, considering I haven't seen Sam in more than half a year. She's always working on this dump." Ky grumbled, crossing her arms.
"Well, you did need the house you used to share more than she did. Plus, she's got charm." I reasoned, patting one of the walls.
"It's kind of hard to not be upset when the only way I can hear from Sam is via text and phone calls. We could've helped renovate." Tori added, clearly not happy either.
"Yeah, two didn't need to shut us out." Louis added.
I looked down at my shoes, scuffing them against the floor, trying to find a way to gently break the news.
"Actually...the reason Sam hasn't left the house isn't because of renovations." I said slowly, looking up shyly.
"Is she sick?" Harry asked worriedly, Tori clutching his hand.
"Well...yeah." I admitted, and Ky gasped.
"What's she sick with? Why couldn't you tell us?" She asked quickly, her anger melting away with concern.
I sighed. "We didn't tell you because one of you-unwillingly- might've let something slip, and I didn't want to risk it." I stated honestly.
There was silence as they took it in, then Zayn asked,"So why is it OK for us to know now?"
Another silence started, and I sighed. Here goes everything.
"She's...she's better, but it's going to take some time for her to recover fully, if she ever does."
Everyone gaped at my confession. "So, what's wrong with her?" Liam asked softly.
I immediatly realized my mistake. "Oh! No, no, I didn't mean it like that. It's...oh, let's just go see her. A picture's worth a thousand words." I decided, throwing caution to the wind.
Ky:
We shuffled forward through the mudroom until we reached the door into the house, and Niall turned to us.
"Sam's resting right now, but she should be OK to socialize for a bit. She's had a rough weekend." He stated, and we all nodded.
Heading forth quietly, we followed Niall until he held up at hand, and we stopped, partially colliding with each other.
Oops.
Niall went forth on his own, towards the couch with a bundle lying on top. He leaned over closer to the bundle, and it stirred, before looking back at us, and my heart skipped a beat.
It was Sam. A paler, more tired Sam, but Sam none the less. She gave a slow wave, before motioning us closer. Niall went through another door, but I was more focused on Sam.
Kneeling by her side, I grabbed her hand. "Hey Sam."
Sam smiled slightly. "Hi guys. When Niall said you were coming over I had figured it wouldn't be at least until tomorrow, but hey, here you are!" She declared softly, clearly out of sorts.
"Why? Would tomorrow have been better?" Tori asked, leaning down beside me. The boys had taken their places behind the couch, probably feeling kind of awkward.
Sam, to everyone's surprise, started laughing. Through snorts, she snickered,"Well yeah!! Tomorrow would've been waaaaay better!" She sat up, keeping the blanket wrapped around her legs.
Confused, I asked, "Why?"
Her laughter stopped, and she cocked her head at me. "Didn't Niall tell you?"
I frowned. "He said you were sick, and that you might not recover."
She stared at me. "Seriously?"
We all nodded, but Tori burst,"What's wrong with you?"
Frowning, Sam finally said,"There's nothing wrong. In fact, everything's better than ever."
I blinked, trying to make sense of it all, before Sam looked up and smiled. "You got 'em?"
Turning around, I froze.
In the doorway stood Niall, holding a little pink blanket in his arms. "Yup." He replied, walking over and placing it in her arms. Peeking up, I saw a pink face between the blanket folds, sleeping peacefully, with dark fuzz across it's head. "This is Katlyn Andrea Horan." Sam whispered, stroking her daughter's cheeks.
"And this..." Niall declared, coming into the room with a blue bundle, "Is Austin William Horan."
There was silence, then Louis declared,"You made it sound like she was dying, dude."
Niall shrugged. "For a while, I thought I might've. She said a lot of things during labor."
Sam giggled. "You did do this to me though." She added seriously, before extending Katlyn. "Wanna hold my baby?" She asked me, and I grinned.
"Heck yea!"
We couldn't stay long before Niall shooed us away, but it was good.
Sam finally had the family she had been needing for years, and I was happy for her.
We all were.
She finally got the happily ever after she deserved.
We were just lucky enough to be along for the ride.
