"So," Aaron said as he put the car in drive, speeding away from the hospital. "What did you do?" He tried not to sound protrusive or invasive, but he had to admit, he was curious. James and Thomas had been friends since kindergarten, preschool maybe. They didn't get into fights often, primarily because of James' mild mannered and soft spoken nature.
Thomas sighed, looking out at the horizon. "I told him I love him." Aaron tried not stare at Thomas in fear of crashing the car.
"Excuse, me what?" Aaron asked in awe. Thomas buried his face in his unbroken hand, trying to cover the blush he could feel rising in his cheeks.
"I'm in love with James," Thomas mumbled.
"Really?" Aaron was wide-eyes, extremely surprised that one, Thomas was in love with James, and two, he would even admit something like that to him of all people.
"Yes Aaron, really. I've known for a few years now. And I told him," Thomas looked down, his face dropping.
"I'm guessing it didn't go well?"
"Not at all. He told me that I was a liar, that I pity him. He just won't see it Aaron, how much me fucking means to me. I don't know what to do," Thomas ran his hands through his hair.
Aaron drummed his thumbs on the steering wheel. "Why not though?" Aaron raised an eyebrow. "You two have been friends for how long? Forever? Why wouldn't he believe you?"
Thomas bit his lip, pondering on whether he should actually tell Aaron that part of the story. "He's had a lot of douchebag boyfriends, including the last one." Thomas gritted his teeth. "James Reynolds. That motherfucker abused him. Now James is so fucked up from all of the guys who told him he's worthless, he actually believes them," Thomas couldn't help the way his voice started to raise.
"Oh shit," Aaron said, covering his mouth. "Was it bad?"
"Very. Bruises everywhere. Face, stomach, arms, I didn't see his legs but I wouldn't be surprised if they were covered in bruises too. In some places it looked like the fucker kicked him," Thomas knitted his eyebrows, feeling himself getting angrier and angrier.
"So what do we do?" Aaron looked over at Thomas. "There's gotta be something we can do."
"Yeah, but what?" Thomas looked up, almost banging his hand into the window as he spoke.
What? He used a lot of hand gestures.
"I don't know," Aaron chewed on his lip. "Okay, I might have an idea, but don't laugh."
Thomas gave Aaron an uneasy glare.
"I think," Aaron paused, watching Thomas out of the corner of his eye, wanting to see his exact reaction. "You should ask Hamilton to help you write a letter."
Thomas didn't know whether he should laugh or throw up in reaction to Aaron's obscene suggestion. "What?!" He stretched the a a little too long, in the classic Thomas Jefferson way. "I can't stand that guy. Plus, if I were to write a letter, I wouldn't need his help."
"Come on Thomas, you know he writes the best letters in history. Have you seen his letter to that Laurens guy?" Thomas glared daggers at Aaron. "You know it's a good idea, you're just too stubborn to admit it."
"How am I even going to get him to help me? You know he hates me, and I hate him."
"Tell him what happened. Sure he hates you, but he's not opposed to doing something for a good cause. Believe it or not he's not a horrible guy," Aaron pretended he didn't here Thomas mutter 'yes he is'. "Please just give it a try? Tomorrow in law you can talk to him. I'll keep my eye on James, see how he's doing. Deal?"
"Fine," Thomas groaned, looking over at Aaron who smiled. "But if this goes wrong, I'm blaming it on you."
"Okay." Aaron nodded. Thomas set his feet on the dashboard, smirk on his face.
"Oh, and you still owe me that mac and cheese you promised."
