❝is anyone there at all?❞ | CH. ONE

---in a world where soulmates exist, Asteria Williams struggled to find hers. With most people around her finding their other half, it was begrudging for the girl that she hasn't found hers yet.

All she has from him were the scars that littered her skin. It shocked her how her soulmate was exceedingly clumsier than other people her age. Every month she'd find herself gaining more of them, always appearing on her arms and legs every morning just before she wakes up. She'd always wear long sleeved clothes to cover up the scars. Her mother told her she started getting them when she was four, and ever since then she'd always make up theories about who her soulmate was. One of the many popular theories were when she thought he might be a secret agent after watching a James Bond movie. Though she never gets hurt by them, she couldn't help but worry about her soulmate.

"Did you got one again?" Her friend, Louis said, sitting across from her. Asteria shoved her face deeper on her palms, Louis tsked, "your soulmate needs to be more careful."

"Tell me about it," grumbled Asteria, "not a month goes by without that git getting hurt and in some way give both of us a scar."

"He might be an Auror in training," Louis suggested.

"I don't think so," she tutted, "I'm a hundred percent sure he's the same age as me."

"And what makes you say that?"

"I just know that's all, like this weird gut feeling I get."

"You just know?"

"Oh, let's change the topic already," Asteria said, flailing her hand as a signal to change the subject, "are you excited for school?"

"A little, I guess," Louis shrugged, "I just wish Professor Noorhelm would actually teach something useful."

"I forgot you were taking Xylomancy," Asteria thought out loud, "how is reading twigs going for you?"

"Dreadful," he groaned.

"That bad, huh?" Asteria laughed at her friend's suffering, but quickly stopped when he shot her a glare. "Anyways, I'm more excited about the sorting." She said, in attempts to lighten him up.

"You're just waiting for someone to get accepted into two houses," Louis smirked knowingly.

"Well, yeah!" She exclaimed, "come on I can't be the only one!"

"I still don't know why you picked Thunderbird over Wampus," he said.

"That's because those Wampus jocks are all brawns," Asteria scoffed, "besides you got sorted in Thunderbird and you're my only friend."

"I'm flattered, Ria," Louis grinned.

The train came to a stop, causing Asteria to jolt forward a little. A loud horn sounded from a distance, waking up some passengers as it did.

"We're here," Louis declared, taking his suitcase from beside him.

"Tell me, why do we travel with No-Majs?" Asteria questioned, grabbing her suitcase and scarf.

"That's because it's one of the easiest ways to get to school," he answered, walking off, with Asteria following behind him.

The pair exited the train with only a little struggle, knowing how only a few No-Majs would stop by their location. They stopped in front of a table, laying down their case on it before the man inspected their belongings for any firearms, only seeing their wands and Thunderbird scarves.

"Ilvermorny, here we come!" Louis exclaimed softly, afraid that someone might hear him.

"Another year of being lonely," Asteria sighed.

"Oh cheer up, I'm still here, I still haven't found my other half," he said, trying to cheer her up. "Just relax, you'll find him."

"Just wish it would come soon though," she whispered.

"Look," Louis said, "if you really want to meet him then why not reach out to him in your dream."

"You can do that?"

"Of course you can."

"How do you know?"

"Well while I was busy reading twigs, I kind of remembered Professor Noorhelm saying she first met her soulmate in her dream."

"How?"

"Just close your eyes and think of happy thoughts."

---asteria carefully opened her eyes to see a dry pathway surrounded by a vineyard. Confused, she lifted herself up from the ground. Her eyes looked around in search of a sign.

The sky looked bluer than usual with not a cloud to taint it. The grapes growing around her varying from colours of green, purple, blue, crimson and black. The whole place looked surreal for the girl.

She began walking down the path, oblivious to where it might take her. She tried looking around again whilst her feet carried her to where the path lead. There was a mountain not too far from where she was, she could also see a black smoke erupting close to it. She beckoned there must be someone else here to make a fire.

The path ended in front of a vast field. The air smelling like freshly mowed grass mixed with pinecones. Asteria took a step closer, her feet brushing against the leaves before stepping forward.

She looked ahead to see a silhouette of a man standing not too far from where she was standing.

Her eyes bulged out of her skull as she realised it might be him, her soulmate.

"Hello?" She called out. No response. Not even a flinch. "Hey!" She yelled once again, taking another step before she started sprinting.

"Who are you?" When the words escaped her lips, he vanished. Asteria stopped running, staring at where the guy was. Frantically, she looked around in search of the man.

Suddenly, the ground began to shake. The mountain she saw earlier began to crumble whilst the grass under her feet started to turn grey.

A black hole formed around her, swallowing her whole body before her eyes fluttered open.

Her forehead dripping cold sweat as she looked around her room, seeing not the field nor the man  but her roommates fast asleep.
