"You're fucking kidding me."

Those were the only words I could muster to my now ex-boyfriend Rantarou after he told me he wanted to break up with me. I stared at him in sheer disbelief, completely at a loss for what to say. After all, we were at our school's yearly formal, him being my date to it.

"I'm sorry, (y/n)... truth be told, I have feelings for someone else," he admitted solemnly. I grabbed onto the sides of my dress, trying to mask my anger.

"Who?! Who is it?" I blurted angrily. He looked at me blankly, his expression unchanging. Tears formed in the corners of my eyes, my emotions running amok. "Why... won't you tell me..."

"I think it's best if I go," he smiled awkwardly as he grabbed his glass, calmly striding away as if nothing happened. I felt my anger fester inside me, forming into one giant ball. I turned away, making a beeline for the bathroom.

"Woah! (Y/n)!" A voice shouted to me. I turned and saw Saihara, a close friend of mine, staring at me in shock. "What's wrong? Where are you running?"

"R.. ran.. tarou... dumped... m-me...." I choked, my words coming out in short segments. Saihara's eyes widened in disbelief, his jaw dropping open.

"(Y/n)..." he muttered in disbelief. "Don't worry about it. I'm here to help you now. Your wish is my command."

"Get me out of here," I pleaded, wiping at the tears in my eyes. He nodded, suddenly grabbing me by the hand and pulling me out of the ballroom. As we made our way out, shocked and confused whispers about us followed.

Once outside, my feet froze up as if I didn't want to move anymore. Saihara looked at me in worry as I began to tear up all over again.

"There, there..." he muttered softly, pulling me into a tight embrace. "You're safe now... I'm sorry I grabbed you like that. I-I don't know what came over me, but seeing you hurt like that..."

"Don't apologize," I whimpered softly, burying my face into his chest. "I should have known something like this would happen. But today, of all days....?"

He suddenly let go of me, staring deep into my eyes. "Wait out here. It'll only be a minute."

I nodded compliantly, wrapping my arms around myself in an attempt to stay warm. I was staring up at the stars when I heard yelling and crashing coming from inside the ballroom. I turned, Saihara returning through the big revolving doors a few moments later.

"I'm sorry that you had to wait," he muttered, adjusting his tie slightly. "I... had to do something."

"...what did you do?" I asked innocently, the boy merely taking off his suit jacket and putting it over my shoulders.

"Don't worry," he smiled awkwardly, starting to walk into the parking lot. "Let's go somewhere else. I don't think it's a good idea to stay here."

"You're being awfully aggressive," I stared nervously.

"Well, who wouldn't be?" He asked me, a strange glimmer in his eyes. "Some jerk just broke my close friend's heart on the night of a dance, so I guess you could say I'm a little pissed."

"A little..." I echoed, rushing to catch up with him. I collapsed into the passenger seat of his car, him promptly speeding off from the ballroom. I began to cry again, keeping my eyes focused on the passing streetlights.

"(Y/n)... I am so, so sorry," he muttered, sounding like his normal self again. "A jerk like that doesn't deserve you in the slightest. You deserve so much better..."

"Thanks, Saihara," I smiled through my tears, clutching onto the sides of his jacket.

"Where would you like me to take you?" He asked calmly.

"Anywhere... I just don't want to be alone."

We drove for a few moments, eventually ending up at a nearby ice cream parlor. "Why here?"

"I figured a sweet treat would cheer you up... I'll pay, of course."

The two of us walked in, alarming the staff and customers with our formal appearances. Once we bought our ice cream, we began to walk around outside together.

"Saihara... thank you so much. You're such an amazing friend..." I muttered softly.

"Anything for you, (y/n)..." he replied, his cheeks turning the slightest shade of pink. We stopped and stared at each other for a moment, unsure of what to say.

"Listen..." he muttered softly. "I know you just got dumped, but there's something I've been meaning to tell you."

"Huh? What is it?" I asked, my heart beginning to race nervously.

"Well... ever since we met, I've always thought you were such an amazing girl. You're kind, beautiful, smart, talented, funny.. I could go on. But, I just wanted to say that I've f-fallen in love with you... the first time I saw you, o knew.... and I never had the courage to say anything."

"Saihara," I muttered, unsure of how to respond. I felt guilty as I had just been broken up with, though I suddenly began to realize how Saihara was always there for me. Whenever I was in need, the usually shy boy would always try to help me. And it didn't matter whether or not he was successful... he was always there.

"Well... you don't have to say anything... I'm sorry," he muttered, cupping his hand over his mouth. "That was so horrible of me... to confess to you right after you were dumped... I'm a monster."

Suddenly, I blurted something in response. He stared at me in disbelief, his eyes widened. He then pulled me into a hug, tears streaming down his face. My heart raced, though I couldn't help but feel safe in his arms.

Oh, what I said?

The truth.

"I love you too."
