13) From Past to Present

"So who was she? You act like you once had some fling with her and it didn't end well." Raven spoke, trying to get the Goblin King to spit it out.

"Alright, I'll spill." Jareth sighed and slumped into the bench. "Penelope was once a partner I had for awhile. When we started, she was sweet and a helluva lot nicer than she is now..." He trailed.

"What happened?"

"While we were together she came upon something and got it in her head that she could take place at my side as queen and become ruler. I refused no matter how many times she asked, because I could tell that that's all she wanted. She tried to get me killed once, but failed obviously.

Penelope set a banshee trap while I was in my garden, in hopes to get me torn to shreds. But don't worry, it's safe now. When I found out it was her doing, I banished her from my kingdom. Every once in a while she comes back, like today, just to piss me off." Jareth mumbled, rubbing his temple.

"Wow... So that's why you hoped I never met her, because you know she'll try and push me away." She fiddled with a vine hanging beside her.

"Exactly. And now she's jealous that you're closer to me than she ever will be again. She's revolting now. I would much rather dig my own grave than to be with her again."

A moment of silence passed by them, and the sun had started to set slowly. Jareth, wanting to keep his surprise a secret, jumped up to pull the girl away from the garden.

"Why don't we go eat dinner, before it gets cold." He held his hand down to the girl, who took it without hesitation this time.

"Who makes it anyway?"

"I have my ways." Jareth grinned.
