i was getting tired of hanging out all day at the clinic, especially when i'm doing nothing. so i went out after asking mrs. lee for permission, i sought out to find a place to work.
so far, i haven't seen stores that needed new employees. i'm at a loss, but then, i ended up looking back to that convenient store i would always buy (booze and cigarettes) from.
reluctantly entering, i saw the usual lady by the cashier, chewing on gum. i was prepared to receive the dirty look, but i was surprised when she didn't.
"hey, it's been a while." just when i thought things would actually go well for the first time, i knew i had spoken too soon when the smile on her face disappeared. "so, the usual then? soju and these-i prepared them since you always buy the same brand, anyway."
"look, i don't use those. it's my mom who makes me.. buy them."
"sure, whatever." was all she said, stacking those back to their places.
"but i did come here for a job. i-is there any free spot?"
as she pulled the gum out of her mouth, sticking it under the desk, she placed an arm on her waist and examined me from head to toe. "why would you apply here of all places? besides, you got a mom, right?"
"i.. okay, listen. i ran away from home and i'm staying at a place far from where she lives. i need to work so i can pay for my tuition at my art school."
"i didn't need to know that much of your story, boy. anyway, just go into that office to be interviewed by the boss." she casually pointed at the office behind her. i nodded as i made my way there.
taking a seat in front of the desk, i patiently waited, tapping my fingers on top of the table while the boss wasn't here yet.
"hey." my eyes widened in shock at the familiar voice. i stared at her as she sat down in front of me, crossing her arms across her chest.
"you're your own boss?" i said to the cashier lady.
"i wish." she scoffs, laying her head on top of the palm of her hand. "but no. i'm just covering for my unnie until she comes back." she sighs exasperatedly as she reached for a pen from the pen holder, tapping on her clipboard.
"anyway, what's your name?"
"jungkook."
"age?"
"17."
"i don't think i'm supposed to hire underaged teens, but i guess i could make you an exception-as a special case." she lifted her eyebrows, pursing her lips into a thin line then leaned against the chair comfortably. "done, you're hired."
"uh, don't interviews usually contain more.. questions?" i just had to ask.
"did you go to college?" (a/n : okay, maybe a pun for JK lmao)
i shook my head. she nodded delightfully and smiled. "just shut up and accept that you're hired, okay, pretty boy?" she stood up, walking out of the room. i followed her to the store.
"thank you! um, so when do i start?"
she looks up to see the clock ticking by and said, "tomorrow, by 4p.m."

i wrapped my arms around myself , trying to get rid of the cold breeze blowing right through me. i've run away from the house for a whole day now, but mom didn't seem to care enough to look for me--hunt for me, rather.
come to think of it, lisa took care of almost everything i need; food, a bed, and her comfortable presence i can't seem to put my finger on.
"jeon?" i gulped at the nickname. slowly turning around, i saw jieun standing across the street with her hands hidden in her coat.
"h-hi." well, this is awkward.
"um, what are you doing here?" she asked as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, awaiting for my response.
i shrugged. "i applied for a job."
her eyes widened a bit, pointing at the convenience store which was still located close by. "did you perhaps mean.. that workplace?"
i nodded. "why, is there a problem?"
"no! actually, it's quite fateful. i work there, too."
my heart started speeding up its pace at the thought. "y-you do? but i always come here. how come i never see you?"
"well, seeing as i live by myself, i provide for myself, of course i need to work, don't i? but since i was promoted as the boss a few weeks ago, i get to work whenever i want. i chose the weekends."
i gave a simple nod and an, 'ahh' reaction. but then she decided she wanted to make it less awkward by starting a new topic.
"jungkook-ah, i was thinking about what i said to you earlier and was.. kind of hoping to have your answer. uh, what do you say?"
i don't know if it's just me, but even though iu-subaenim asked me for help, i didn't want to. i want to help her, but in my own way.
"i want to help, iu-sunbaenim, i really do. how can i?" i bit my lower lip. that was not supposed to be sentence coming out from my mouth. i was supposed to convince her everything's going to be fine. but i guess i wanted to make a move now that she's free.
she smiled in relief, holding on to my shoulder, "i have tickets to see a movie on friday. would you like to come with me?"
how can i say no to someone i like, even?
"i would love to."
"great! it's a date, then."
