Chapter 26, final chapter: Johnny pov

What happened next was a blur.
I ran up and punched Hayden in the face so quickly neither of us realised what we were doing. Maddie and Lauren joined in, angrier than I've ever seen them.
'Why did you do this,' Maddie screamed, her voice trembling. She slapped him in the face. 'Did you not realise what it would do to us? What it would do to you?'
Hayden didn't answer.
We kept going, constantly keeping him down, never giving him a second to recover.
'You'll never stop me,' Hayden roared. 'How could you even-'
'Shut. Up.' I said quietly. 'You've done enough as it is.'
Anger took over our movements, and before we knew it he was unconscious.
'Lauren and Maddie,' I panted, out of breath. 'Go. Give him to the police. I'll find Kenzie.'
They looked like they wanted to protest at first, but then they looked at my face and nodded.
'Johnny?' Said Maddie. 'Good easy on my sister.' She smiled, and they walked off.
I stared looking around, calling Mackenzie's name, panting and exhausted and not giving up.
After 10 minutes, I broke down into tears. I was desperately lost and tired and alone and I wanted Kenz, I wanted her to be there, to hug me and tell me everything was gonna be fine and-
'Johnny?' Whispered a small voice.
I turned around and saw my girlfriend standing there, shivering in her underwear. Purple and black bruises covered her entire body.
She ran into my arms.
'Mackenzie,' I choked out as she sobbed into my arms. 'It's gonna be okay.'
And that's we heard the police helicopter, coming down to get us.

Once inside the helicopter, I found a blanket and wrapped it around Mackenzie gently, and pulled her close to me.
'Mackenzie,' a police woman said, walking towards us. 'We need to know everything that happened as soon as possible, so-'
'Give her a few minutes,' I interrupted.
She smiled gratefully at me, and the police woman walked off.
'Sorry if I'm a bit quiet, by the way,' said Kenz. 'I've been through a lot and-'
I almost cried again.
'Too much,' I said. 'You've been through too much.'

Maddie pov:
'Mackenzie!' I screamed, and she ran into my arms as I started sobbing uncontrollably. 'I'm sorry,' I said. 'I should have stopped it some-'
'Don't be silly,' she said, her voice broken with what she had been through. 'You couldn't have done anything.'
Then Lauren and my mother found us and they cried as well and Mum blamed herself to the point where a police man had to come in to calm her.
'Thank you for saving me,' Kenzie choked out.
'Thank you for being strong,' I said. 'Kenz, I don't want to imagine what Hayden put you through. But you need to go now, as much as I hate it. Go. Tell the police what happened before Hayden regains consciousness. He deserves a lifetime sentence in jail if you ask me,' I sobbed, and she laughed.
'I agree,' said Lauren. 'You should go.'
*Outside, Johnny and Mackenzie*
Mackenzie pov:
'What happens now,' said Johnny.
'What do you mean,' I whispered, clutching his hand.
'What are you going to do,' he said. 'I heard Melissa talking about you moving,' he said, and suddenly I saw where this conversation was going.
'Johnny,' I said. 'Look at me.' He did. 'I'm not letting that happen. I don't want pity, I don't want people crowding round asking what happened, I just want to go back to normal. But first, I need to be mentally back to normal. And that's where I need you. Please, I know you may not want to, but do you think we could just go back to the way it was? I-'
'What did you think I wanted to do,' he cuts in, his eyes twinkling. 'Break up with you?'
I didn't meet his eye.
'Don't be stupid,' he laughed. 'I love you. And no matter what happens... I always will. And I won't let anyone change that.'
Then he leaned in and kissed me, and suddenly I forgot all about Hayden. All that mattered was Johnny, and I suddenly I realised that everything happens for a reason.
