Second and third period was study hall, so I was forced to show the new kid around the school. Sitting next to him was bad enough and now I'd have to spend two hours with him. Thankfully lunch time came quickly. Today was Taco Tuesday which seemed to be the only good thing about today. I was in a relatively good mood until the new kid sat down at my table.
"Why are you here?" I asked rudely
"Since you're the only person I know here I thought I'd sit next to you," he replied kindly despite my rude tone.
"Why are you sitting next to that loser? Come and sit with us," Amber said as she gestured over to the table she was at with her 'cool' friends.
"No thanks," he declined "I'd rather sit here."
I chuckled.
"What's so funny Lunch Meat?" she asked rudely
Great! A new nickname. I shrugged and remained silent. She caught site of my bracelet and a mischievous smirk tugged at the corners of her mouth.
"That's a cute bracelet."
She snatched it off my wrist and because it was too big it slipped of like a glove, she laughed and walked away.
Now I was pissed. I pulled her back by her hair and kneed her in the stomach. She fell to the floor, clutching her stomach in pain. I pulled her up by her collar and looked her straight in the eyes.
"Do me a favour, go shrivel up in a corner and DIE!"
I pushed her back onto the floor grabbed my backpack and as I was about to leave the cafeteria my path was blocked by Amber friends.
"Get out of my way!" I shouted
They moved.
"Dumbasses," I muttered to myself.
As I walked out all eyes were on me but I was too angry to care. I completely forgot that I made a promise to get through high school without drawing any attention to myself, but I guess that promise was broken the minute I woke up. There was just something about today that made me feel a lot worse than I usually did.
I sat in front of my locker, contemplating the ways in which I could end my life. Today seemed to be a very good to end it all as I was already miles passed my breaking point. A shadow loomed over me consequently blocking the light. Before I could register what was happening the person pulled me into their embrace. All of my dark thoughts subsided, but I could still feel their presence weighing me down.
"Hey short stuff forgotten about me so soon!" a familiar voice called
There was only one person that called me that.
"KY!" I shouted and jumped into his arms.
"I've missed you so much," I said and started crying
Ky and I had been best friends all the way up until middle school, he sudden moved away without warning or reason. His departure brought on the dark thoughts that circled my mind almost everyday.
"It's ok Momo you don't have to cry anymore I'm here now," he said whilst patting my head
He took of my glasses and wiped away the tears that fell down my cheeks.
"C'mon short stuff lets go have a proper talk."
"Sure!" I agreed "And you know I don't like it when call me that."
"But you're so small," he said whilst we walked toward the exit.
We got outside and Ky and I talked about everything had gone on in the years we hadn't seen each other. He told me that he was sent away to go study in England. We talked for the rest of lunch about random stuff and just before lunch ended he handed me a long blue box.
"Happy Birthday!"
I could't believe he remembered with all the time that we had spent apart. The lid slid off to reveal a diamond necklace, whether or not it was real didn't concern me because it looked so exquisite.
"This is really pretty, but it must have cost you a fortune."
I was genuinely grateful. For once my dark thoughts were completely gone.
"Nothing but the best for my girlf-... um best friend," He replied and helped me put it on
"Well I have to go but I'm transferring here, so I'll see you tomorrow."
He pushed back my fringe and kissed my forehead which I had to say surprised me a little but I didn't show it.
"Really missed you," he whispered
"See you tomorrow," I said
"Bye."
I watched him as he walked away before walking back inside.
