"Hmmm..." Dave said to himself as I walked back to them. Karkat was skating on the ice as Dave mumbled, "Looks like he finally found out what Agape is. He's ready for the next stage."

Next stage? Do I get one after I perform my routine?
I have the solid framework, but I'm still missing something. What is it?

"Hey," Jade came into the dining room later that day after we trained, "What are you guys planning to wear for costumes for the competition?"
"I have no clue. We haven't even thought about that."
"Yeah, we haven't." Karkat agreed.
Dave had just finished chugging an entire bottle of apple juice, "Yo, don't sweat it. I had all of my outfits shipped over here from Texas. You two can go through it and pick what you like."

Sure enough, it was true. He really did have everything shipped over here. Boxes came one by one. Karkat and I looked through all of them, and I loved every moment of it. These were worn by Dave in every competition!
"I remember this one! OOH! And this one too! Oh, that one is so cool!"

"HEY!" Karkat growled, "Don't pick anything flashier than mine! But seriously Dave... You actually wore all of this sparkly shit?"
"THIS ONE IS FROM THE GRAND PRIX FINAL!" I nearly squealed.
"SHUT UP, JOHN! I'M GONNA GO DEAF BECAUSE OF YOU!"

I picked up another outfit, staring at it, "Hey! I remember this one! You wore it at the Junior Championship!"
"Yeah, at the time I looked kinda angsty with long hair. The costume was designed for either gender. It's one of my favorites."

I remember... I remembered seeing Dave on tv. I was watching tv with both Jade and Rose, cheering Dave on as he skated. His outfit was something hard to forget.

"I pick this one..." I smiled and held it close to my chest, "Is that okay?"
"Yeah, definitely." Dave smiled, "I think it'll fit you well after we mess around with how to style that hair of yours."
"What's wrong with my hair?"
"Nothing, but with how it's styled, you won't impress anyone. Maybe your sister can help out with that when the time comes."
"Found mine," Karkat mumbled, folding up an outfit and hiding it under his jacket. He didn't say another word and walked upstairs to his room.

"Hey, mind helping me put away all of these?" Dave asked, moving the outfits we went through back into the boxes.
"Sure." I smiled and started folding some, putting them away.  I heard Dave yawn after a while and rub his eyes, "Hey, I don't mind putting the rest away if you're tired. You should go sleep."

"I think I should be telling you that since the big day is tomorrow and  I am supposed to be your coach." He laughed, "Well, not officially, but I should probably start."
"...But I haven't earned it yet. I still have to compete against Karkat."

"Are you nervous?" He scooted a little closer to me, "You shouldn't be."

"I don't know how I feel." I sighed, "I'm confident about the routine, but I feel like there's something missing."

I felt Dave drape his arm around my shoulder, "Like what?"

"I don't know..." I looked down, messing with the edge on my sleeve, "How am I supposed to surprise people."
"John, you have to have a little more faith in yourself." Dave ruffled my hair, "You surprised me numerous times. Try thinking outside the box to display your sexiness." He stood up and lifted his sunglasses, winking before walking upstairs.

Outside the box....

"Jade!" I snook into her room and woke her up, "I need your help with something."

"Right now?" She groaned, "Can't it wait for tomorrow? It's one in the morning!"
"I need your help dancing."

"Dancing?" She sat up and turned on her lamp. She moved her hair out of her face, "You want to practice now?"
