The day began like any other. I woke up around 8, put my long, brown hair into a side braid and headed down to The Black. I’d worked there for the past two summers saving up for my college tuition. I lived in San Diego my whole life and I loved the beach. From surfing to long-boarding, Pacific Beach was the place to be.
I rode my long-board to work and clocked in 15 minutes early, giving me just enough time to walk down to the water. “The waves are perfect today.” I thought aloud. I pulled my phone out of my back pocket and called my brother, Max. He was a grade younger than me and unlike most siblings, he was my best friend. “Hey it’s Max. If you’re calling, it means I didn’t answer your text for a reason -beep-“
“Ayy kid, you’re missing out on some nice waves today. Call me when you wake up and we’ll go surfing after I get off work.” I took one last look at the water before heading back up to the shop.

Around 3pm, I grabbed my board from the back room and ran out the door of The Black to find my brother in our family Volkswagen with our surfboards tied to the top. “Sunset Cliffs till dawn?” Max suggested as I climbed into the passenger seat.
“Sounds good to me!”

“So how was work today?” Max and I sat on our boards waiting for one last wave.
“Just another day.” I sighed. “You see mom today?”
“Yea, she got home around noon. Worked another late shift, so I assume she went to sleep after I left.” Our mom worked as an ER doctor at Sharp Hospital and was rarely home. After our dad left us, my mom worked extra hours to support my brother and I.
We sat in silence for a while until the last wave came. “Race you to the car!” Max shouted before splashing me with water and took off.
~
Whenever Max and I went surfing, we never got home until after dark. We drove silently down the road, windows down, music blasting. For being a 17 year old boy, my brother was awfully quiet tonight. Out of his friends, Max was definitely the rowdiest and was always cracking jokes.
I sate sideways in the passenger seat watching him. Max really was my best friend and I probably spent more time with him than with any of my friends from school. “Why don’t you take a picture, Scout.” He smirked. “It’ll last longer.”
“Because then my camera might break and you don’t have the money to buy me a new one.”
“Har har.” Max gave me a fake laugh and turned the radio louder.
“I LOVE THIS SONG!” I exclaimed. Max and I sung at the top of your lungs to Pompeii by Bastille. I loved these moments my brother and I had, but little did I know it would be the last…
