LISTEN TO THE MEMORY - MAYDAY PARADE IF YOU WANT A FULL EFFECT!!!
Two weeks...
It's been two weeks since I last left my room; two weeks since I've spoken to anyone since the accident. Max was gone... and there wasn't anything that anyone could do to bring him back.
-
I sat in my bedroom window looking out at the ocean. The waves were perfect today... Max would've dragged me out to the water on a day like this. But he wasn't here... A light knock on the door interrupted my thoughts. "Scout?" my mom whispered. "I'll take you down to get your paycheck at The Black in a while if you want to."
I let out a long sigh before standing up and walking over to the door. I hesitated before turning the knob. I haven't spoken to my mom since we returned home from the hospital and this was the first thing she's said to me. Often, I would hear her crying at night. She's lost not only her son, but me too. We used to be really close when I was growing up, but since my dad left she worked too much for us to even exchange hellos.
She looked up at me standing in the doorway, but I refused to raise my head. She sniffled and I could tell she's been crying recently. "Are you okay to go out today?"
I kept my eyes on the floor and mumbled a quiet, "Yea..."
"Scout..." She choked on her words as she brought me into a tight hug.
"I'm so sorry," I cried.
"No honey, it's not your fault."
I suddenly felt weak, like my legs couldn't hold my weight, and I fell to the floor. "But it is..." I sobbed. "I should've kept my mouth shut. I provoked him in argument and he lost control. I should've been quiet.
My mom knelt down beside me and held me in her arms while I cried. "It's not anyone's fault Scout. Things happen. It's okay."
She was trying to be strong for me, but I knew that inside she was screaming...
-
After having yet another breakdown in the shower, I headed downstairs to tell my mom I was ready to go. I was wearing one of Max's flannel shirts with a black tank-top and shorts. The flannel smelt like my brother... it was comforting.
I met my mom in the car and we drove down to The Black. "You look good in that shirt by the way," my mom smiled at me. "It was one of my favorites."
I brought the sleeves up to my face and inhaled slowly. "Mine too."
-
As usual, there wasn't any parking so I had my mom wait for me at the end of the street while I walked down the sidewalk. I took a deep breath before heading through the shop entrance. It wasn't long until I was embraced by my best friend, Kate. She was a year older than me and we'd met at The Black last summer. Kate was your typical "babe" with long blond hair and bright blue eyes. Max was absolutely crazy for her. "Scout!" she yelled pulling me in for a hug. "I'm so sorry..."
"It's okay...." I mumbled pulling away. She looked at me with tears in her eyes and took my hand.
"So what can I help you with/'
"I uhh... I'm actually here to get my last paycheck."
"You're quitting?" Kate looked at me like I was crazy. "What about college?"
"I just thought I could use a break right now. I just don't have a clear enough head to interact with people right now..."
"I understand," she nodded. "And whenever you feel like coming back just talk to Joseph. I'm sure he'll be more than happy to help you kido."
"Awesome, thanks Kate.I'll text you." I gave her a smile before heading into the back room.
-
I walked over to the folder that held our checks in the back office and began to search for my name. I'd notices a few new names on the list of employees. Being summer times there were always kids roaming around the boardwalk looking for jobs. Just as I found my name and began to rip out my paper, I was startles by an unfamiliar voice.
"Hey. You can't be back here."
