We pulled into the driveway around midnight after stopping at Taco Bell for food. Max and I always have strange cravings after surfing and tonight they consisted of nachos and Mountain Dew. “You don’t work tomorrow, right?” Max asked turning off the ignition.
“No, Fridays through Mondays off. Why?”
“Let’s go surfing again tomorrow morning. I heard the waves are supposed to be nice.” He suggested, still seated in the car.
“Okay,” I nodded. “Are umm… are you going out again tonight?”
He looked down at the steering wheel. “I’ve gotta find him Scout… I just wanna know why.”
I got out of the car and closed my door. “Just be careful alright.”
“Yea…” I watched my brother pull out of the driveway and disappear around the corner before I turned and headed inside.

I woke up at 4 am to a pounding on my bedroom window. “Scout, get up! I found him!”
For the past year, my brother has been spending his late nights searching for our dad. Last summer, he just walked out and we hadn’t heard from him since. Max took it the hardest. Our dad was his hero.
I jumped out of bed, throwing on my Endless Summer hoodie and climbed out the window. Max and I were never the kind of people who questioned others; we just kind of went with it. Max was waiting in the car when I got to the end of the driveway. “Hurry Scout, we have to go!”
~
I sat in the passenger seat staring out the window at the sunrise. Max was mumbling under his breath but I couldn’t process a word he was saying. All I kept thinking was, “What’s gonna happen… what the hell are we going to say? Hey Dad, remember us…”
“So… where did you find him?” I asked trying to break the creeping silence.
“…I found his car in front of a Motel 6 in Oceanside.”
“YOU DROVE ALL THE WAY TO OCEANSIDE??? Jesus Christ Max, you’ve got to stop doing this. He’s not-“
“YEA, WELL AT LEAST I CARED ENOUGH TO FIND HIM SCOUT. ALL YOU’VE MANAGED TO DO WAS PUSH IT AWAY LIKE HE NEVER EXISTED.” Max had snapped. In the year that we’ve being trying to coup with the fact that we no longer had a father, Max had always remained calm.
“WELL OBVIOUSLY HE DIDN’T THINK WE MEANT MUCH TO HIM IF HE DECIDED TO LEAVE US. GOD DAMN MAX, WHY CAN’T YOU GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEAD THAT HE’S NOT WORTH YOUR PITTY.”
With the tension building in the car, we didn’t even realize that Max was speeding before he lost control of the vehicle and we went soaring across the highway. The last thing I remember, was waking up in the ambulance without my brother....
