Michael worked the next day and didn’t get off until late in the afternoon. I woke up around 10 and made my way down to the living room. Monday morning meant mom was home and I could smell breakfast cooking from my room.
“How was your day yesterday?” she asked, meeting me in the kitchen.
“Actually really good.” I smiled. After LazerTag, Michael took me to Panda Express and we laughed and talked about music for hours.
“Who’s this kid again?”
“Umm.. well his names Michael.” That’s basically all I really knew. His name was Michael Clifford and he’s from Australia… I hoped that mom wouldn’t ask me more.
“Ohhhh.” She tried to hide her smile by taking a drink of orange juice. I was never the type of girl that chased after boys. I hung out with Max and his friends all the time, but they always treated me like one of the guys. And with school as my main focus, I didn’t have time for real relationships.
I spent the rest of the morning watching Netflix with my mom. I missed the days when we’d hang out and just talk about girl things. Before I knew it, it was 3:00.
“Shit.” I mumbled grabbing my phone from the coffee table.
“Excuse me?” my mom stared wide-eyes as I stumbled to get my shoes on.
“Sorry mom. Erm excuse my language… I gotta go! I love you!” I yelled before grabbing my penny board and ran out the door.
-
I turned the corner rather fast, in hoped that I’d catch Michael laving. His truck was still parked in front of The Black which was a relief, but he was nowhere in sight. I hopped off my board and walked in the front entrance of the store.
“Scout!” I was greeted by an unexpected hug.
“Oh, Kate. Hey!” I said scanning the room for Michael.
“Back so soon?! You look great kid!” she smiled.
“Thanks,” I laughed. “Umm, do you know if Michael left or not…”
Her smile grew wide as she motioned towards the door. “Yea, he left a few minutes ago. He walked towards the beach.”
“Thank you!” I gave her a quick hug before heading for the exit. “I’ll text you!”
-
I made my way towards the beach when I noticed a familiar figure sitting on the 4 foot wall that separated the sand from the pavement. I snuck up behind him and quickly covered his eyes with my hands. “Guess who?” I said in my sad excuse for a male voice.
“Will Smith?” he giggled, lowering my hands.
“Shit, you blew my cover. Promise not to tell anyone that my current disguise is a small 17 year old girl.”
Michael stood, now facing me. He leaned in and whispered, “Don’t worry Will, your secrets safe with me.”
He gave me a quick wink and I felt my heart jump into my throat. It’s only been a few days and I was falling in love with someone I knew nothing about…
-
“Question.” Michael said as we walked down the beach waiting for the sunset.
“Answer.” I replied, picking up a broken shell and threw it in the water.
“If your could have any Pokemon in the world, including evolutions, what would you want?”
“Umm—“
He quickly cut me off. “And if you say Pikachu I’m shunning you.”
“Well that’s harsh,” I laughed. “What if Pikachu really is my favorite?”
“Then I’m sorry, but I’d have to shun you. Theres over 150 Pokemon; Pikachu is mainstream and televised.”
I laughed and bend down, pretending to pick something from the ground.
“What’s that?” He asked.
“Your balls,” I said extending my empty hand. “They fell out of your pants when you turned all Pokemon master on me.”
“Oh,” he smirked. “Well you can keep them if you want.”
-
We sat in the sand for the next hour waiting for the sun to set. Michael became quiet after our Pokemon conversation and we’d been sitting in silence… He looked upset, but I don’t know why. I hadn’t done anything wrong… or at least I don’t think I did. We were actually having a nice walk, but something must’ve upset him. We sat a distance away from each other. I watched as he drew small circles in the sand. As the sun began to near the water, he glanced up. Moments passed before the sun vanished and we were left with another disappointing sunset. Michael silently stood up and walked over to me, extending his arm to help me up. I took his hand and let go as we began to make our way back up the beach.
I stayed a distance behind him as we reached the pavement. What was his deal anyways? Everything was fine earlier. Did I do something wrong? The closer we go to his truck, the farther I fell behind. When he reached the door, he stopped and looked at me... still not saying a word.
“I uh… I actually think I’ll walk. But thank you anyways.” I said faking a smile.
We kept eye contact for a few seconds before he opened his door. I set my penny board on the ground and stepped on it. “See you later.”
-
The closer I got to home, the more everything began to hit… There was something wrong. He wouldn’t just get upset for no reason… would he? I really didn’t know much about Michael. Maybe this was normal? Maye it was me… maybe it was the kiss. We hadn’t talked about it since it happened. I thought maybe Michael would’ve at least brought it up or hinted at his. Kissing someone that you’ve just met wasn’t exactly a “normal thing”. Unless—unless Michael played it as something that means nothing at all…
