I didn’t know what time Michael planned on picking me up and in all honesty, I’d much rather go back to bed and never speak to the kid again. He hadn’t given me his number or any jest of what we were doing today so I had no idea what to wear or when to be ready. I settled on a pair of cut off shorts and a cropped spaghetti strap, with my long, wavy hair loosely buned before I headed downstairs to wait for god knows how long.
It was a Saturday, which unfortunately meant that my mom was home. She caught me heading towards the door. “You look nice.”
“Umm, thanks.” I mumbled.
“Are you… going out today?” my mom asked, a bit confused. I hadn’t been out since the accident. I haven’t even left my room much.
“Yea,” I said tucking a stray piece of hair behind my ear. “This kid from The Black is actually supposed to come get me…”
“Really?!” she raised an eyebrow like she was waiting for me to tell her that I was kidding.
“Mhmm and he’ll be here any minute so I’m gonna got wait in the driveway for him.” I was always a great liar. Not really something to brag about, but the perfect child was always trusted. It’s funny how little my mom really knew about me since my dad left…
“Oh, well be safe.” She gave me a quick hug and I headed out the door.
-
I started to think Michael blew me off. I’d been sitting in my driveway for a little over an hour before a familiar gray Toyota turned onto my street. He honked when he saw me and I got up and walked over to his vehicle. “Been waiting long Evans?” he asked turning down the music and unlocked the door.
“Oh, uh no. Not really.” I lied, climbing into the front seat.
“Well you look good.” He quickly looked away and shifted in his seat. “Ready for out do-over?”
“…Do-over?” I raised an eyebrow.
He smiled. “Well our first date was shit, so we’ve got a do-over.”
“You insisted on driving me home yesterday, it wasn’t a date.”
“And you agreed on coming with me today, so it is a date-“
“I NEVER agreed!” I shouted, cutting him off.
“Well you’re here aren’t you?” He smirked, knowing that he’d just won our ‘argument’.
-
“Belmont Park?!” I’d been here millions of times with my friends and Max. We used to go on the rides until we got sick and the first one to throw up had to pay for dinner.
“You’ve been?” He smiled and pulled into a parking space.
“Of course! I came her all the time with my-” I stopped. My throat swelled up and I felt tears surface my eyes. “…yea, I’ve been.”
Michael gave me a confused look, but didn’t say anything. He just nodded and unbuckled his seatbelt. It was quiet for a moment before I spoke again. “So where exactly are you from?”
“Australia.” We got out of the truck and he locked the doors. “I’m staying with my aunt and uncle for the summer to day out of trouble.”
“Oh… so you’re that kid-“
“I was that kid.” he said sternly, cutting me off.
“I’m sorry… I didn’t mean it.”
“It’s alright,” he put his arm around my shoulder as we walked. “People make judgments, it’s human nature.”
I wasn’t sure if Michael was trying to make a move or just reassure me that everything was fine, but I slipped from his grasp either way. In response, Michael grabbed my arm and began to run.
“What do we go on first?” he asked, excitement filled his voice.
“Haha, whatever you want.” I giggled pulling money from my pocket as we entered the line.
“I’ve got is covered Scout.” He smiled and removed his wallet.
-
Michael’s eyes lit up as he dragged me over to the bumper cars. “Last time, I promise!”
I laughed as he folded his long legs into the small number 9 cart. “You’re going down Clifford!”
“Oh am I?!” he smirked racing towards me. We weaved in and out of the others, playing a short game of tag. Michael took a sharp turn and crashed head-on into a girl and her friend. He winked at them and turned his car around. I laughed as the girls began to blush and whisper to each other. I hadn’t had this much fun or laughed this much in a long time…
The cars stopped and we made our way to the exit. “Where to now?”
I glanced up at the sky and pointed towards the beach. “I wanna show you something.”
We’d been here hours and the sun was starting to set. When I was little, my dad used to tell me and Max that during the split seconds when the sun disappeared, a green light flashed across the horizon. Max and I always came down to watch the sunset with him, but we never caught the flash…
-
“There’s a what now?” Michael asked trailing behind me as we made our way to the beach.
“A green flash! God pay attention.” I smiled as he panted behind me.
“Are you taking me on an acid trip Scout Evans?” he joked.
“Maybe acid would help.” I laughed plopping down onto the sand. Michael sat next to me and untied his shoes. “I told you not the walk in the sand with them on.”
“Oh hush.” He smirked, shoving my arm.
They sky became a watercolor of reds and oranges as the sun neared the water. Michael and I sat silently, staring out at the horizon. I watched Michael stare intently out at the nothingness. His lips shaped into a smile. “You’re gonna miss it if you don’t watch.”
I felt my face get hot and turned my eyes back to the water. The sun slowly inched its way down and in seconds, vanished.
“WHAT?!” Michael shot up. “WHAT?”
I laughed as he continuously looked from me to the water, his mouth hung open in confusion and shock. “THAT’S SHIT!”
“Did you see it?” I asked gazing up at him.
“You’ve been feeding my bullshit Ms. Evans.” He laughed holding out his hand. “Have you even seen it?”
“Actually no, but my dad has…” I took his hand and hoisted myself up.
“Well he’s a fucking liar!” he playfully shouted.
My smile dropped and I folded my arms across my chest. “Yea…” I mumbled.
“Are you cold?” Michael asked handing me his flannel.
“Thank you.” I smiled shyly and pulled my arms through the sleeves.
We made our way up the beach and walked back towards the truck. The park was now lit up and screams came from the flashing roller coaster. Michael stopped walking behind me and grabbed my hand. “Last time?!”
