“Excuse me?” I turned to find a rather tall boy with dark colored hair, glaring at me with his arms folded across his chest.
“I said you can’t be back here,” he spoke, hinting at a stong Australian accent. “You need to leave before I escort you out myself.”
“Look here Michael,” which I assumed was the name embroidered into his work shirt. “Obviously you’re new here. I’ve worked here for two years and I’m stopping by to get my check. So if you don’t mind, I’d rather resume what I was doing without you breathing down my neck.”
He stood his ground, insisting on giving me a hard time. “My name’s Scout Evans. You can go ask the fucking manager if you don’t believe me, shit.”
Arms folded, he eyes my up and down before leaving the room with a smirk on his face. “Asshole…” I mumbled under my breath. I waited for him to come back, but he never did.

I made my way over to the main office to get my check signed. “Hey kido! How’ve ya been?” I was greeted by yet another tight hug, this one from my manager Joseph.
“…uhh, I’ve been getting by.”
“I’m so sorry about what happened sweetheart,” he said sympathetically. “You take as much time off as you need. Just come talk to me when you’re ready to come back.”
He signed my check and I returned a quick smile before heading back into the front room. There weren’t many customers in today, which wasn’t normal for a Thursday afternoon. Usually there were teenagers coming in and out of the store. I spotted Michael leaning against the front desk, his face submerged in his cellphone. I watched him for a moment before walking towards the door. I’d always had a thing for intent focus on someone; it was my way of figuring people out…
Michael looked up, catching my eye. I quickly looked away and headed out the door. “See you around, Scout.”
