Sam's POV
I thought about S and my conversation. She seemed to really want me to get Syd back. Plus, she and
Nick were getting pretty cozy so I'm pretty sure he's over Syd. I tapped my fingers on the steering wheel
as I stopped at a red light. Syd does deserve something steady, but she can have that with me now. I
drove to Syd's quickly and tried to decide what to say.
I was about to knock on her door when it opened. Clay had his hand on the doorknob and he smiled
nervously. "Sup dude. I was just about to leave... do you want to...?" he made a waving gesture and I
stepped inside. The way Clay looked at me was like he was relieved. Weird. Syd came bounding down
the stairs, "Clay who's -? Oh, hi Sam. Uh... what's up?" I was about to ask to talk to her alone when Clay
interrupted. "Actually, I need to speak to both of you." We both looked at him. He stuck his hands in his
pockets. "Syd, ever since I met you when I came into highschool, I wanted to get to know you. You were
so popular and nice and funny and cute. I'm pretty sure I speak for all guys when I say that." Syd looked
confused but let him keep going. "I was jealous of your friendships and knew that I wanted to be your
friend, well... actually more than your friend. Then, we started hanging out and it was amazing. But...
you lost your friendship with Sam," he turned towards me and nodded, "and it felt wrong. I've seen you
two together." He shook his head like it was hard to get out. "You guys are the epitome of best friends.
Soul mates. I didn't want to admit this to myself because of how much I like you Syd. You are going to
college and I'll still be here." I felt like I was intruding upon this conversation. The next part caught my
attention. "And Syd? You're still in love with Sam. I think you know that but you didn't want to admit it
either." I looked at Syd and saw tears sparkling in her eyes. "And as hard as this is and how terrible we
are at relationships... this isn't going to work." Syd bit her lip and covered her mouth. He walked towards
her and grabbed her hands. I felt a little uncomfortable so I turned away slightly. "I really wish this
could've lasted, but there are literally so many things going against us right now." He cleared his throat.
"Sam will be good for you. You guys really are soulmates." I looked at him and saw the sadness in his
eyes. Right then and there, I knew that Clay was probably the coolest person I have ever met. No guy
that I know could've done that so selflessly. I nodded at him and glanced at Syd. She wouldn't meet my
eyes. Clay walked over to me and stuck out his hand. I took it and he gripped firmly. "Take good care of
her. She deserves her soul mate." He whispered so that only I could hear. I shook his hand and with
that, he walked out.
I watched as his car left the driveway and heard a stifled sob. I looked back at Syd who was now sitting
