"are you sure about this?" jimin whispered worriedly as taehyung grabbed hold of his hand that was fidgeting around the hem of his hospital clothes a moment ago. "don't worry. we'll get back before anyone finds out," taehyung said as he pulled jimin's hand gently and lead the boy out of the room that smelled of disinfectants. the corridors were dark but the moonlight that filtered through the windows guided them along the staircases and out of the hospital they both dreaded to be in.
"where are we going though?" jimin asked the younger, small squeaks heard from their slippers as they took each step. "you'll see," taehyung softly giggled as they walked under the blue moonlight.
"we're here!" taehyung said excitedly. jimin looked around the empty park they were standing in, confused, but happy at the same time too. this wasn't just any park. this was the park they both met up at all the time.
"here, sit here," taehyung said as he pulled jimin towards the swings. "oh and close your eyes," the younger said and began walking away. "w-wait! don't leave me!" jimin held onto taehyung's hand and stopped the brunette from walking any further. taehyung's expression softened at how the older suddenly became alert and frightened. he turned around and cupped jimin's hand that held his. "i'm not leaving you, stupid. i need to get something for you real quick," he assured, emphasizing on how he'd be back soon.
"do this, close your eyes and count to twenty. i'll be right here in front of you once you open your eyes after that, hm?" he asked and lifted the raven haired boy's hands up to his eyes. the moment jimin began counting, taehyung ran as fast as he could to the parking area of the hospital and to his bicycle. he quickly picked up the small box tied around the top tube of the bicycle and dashed back to the park.
"twenty!" jimin said and removed his hands from his eyes to see taehyung holding a small cake with a brightly lit candle on top of it. jimin's face immediately lit up and taehyung managed to see his eye smile despite the darkness. "happy birthday jiminie!" taehyung said breathlessly.
"did you run just now?" jimin asked as he stood up and stared at taehyung's sweaty figure that was still trying to catch his breath. "that's not important," taehyung brushed off and held the cake out towards jimin, "happy birthday to you~" taehyung began to sing, with a bright smile that was only visible due to the candlelight. jimin couldn't help but to smile back at how adorable the younger one was being. "happy birthday to you~ happy birthday dear jiminie~ happy birthday to you~ now, make a wish!" taehyung sang.
jimin clapped softly and held his hands together, intertwining his fingers before closing his eyes and made his birthday wish. he fluttered his eyes open and quickly blew out the candle. taehyung handed over a small knife for jimin to cut the cake.
they both settled down on a bench to begin eating out the cake but before taehyung could put his cake slice into his mouth, "taehyung," jimin spoke. "huh?" taehyung asked with his mouth open wide for the cake. "eat this," jimin said and held out another cake slice. "i already have mine though. i'll take more if i want it. you can eat that," taehyung said, misunderstanding what jimin had actually wanted to do. "no not like that. i- i want to feed this to you," jimin blurted out as his face began heating up. "oh okay," taehyung opened his mouth wider and leaned closer to jimin. jimin held out the slice again and got to do what he had initially wanted and smiled. the two boys finished the entire cake, not leaving a single crumb behind.
when that was done, they both simply sat there in tranquil, listening to the nameless birds sing. gushes of wind would occasionally blow causing the swings to rock back and forth, the hinges squeaking every now and then. dawn was breaking and streaks of red began to form in the sky as the sun rose up; they sat in silence all the while and admired their surroundings.
"i wish this would last forever," jimin said bitterly as his voice cracked, his expression darkening. taehyung bit his lip as he began to tear up, nostalgia rushing into him. "we'll meet here every day, jimin. we'll meet here as many times as you want to," taehyung's voice was barely above a whisper as he tried to muffle a sob.
jimin felt the urge to cry as he began to realize his reality again. the moment a whimper erupted from the raven haired boy, taehyung immediately put his arm around the boy who was breaking down, holding him in a tight embrace. he tried to hush the crying boy, but how could he when he, himself was crying? "don't cry. you're making me cry, stupid," taehyung sobbed out. jimin hid his face in the crook of taehyung's neck as a small smile formed on his lips due to what the latter was saying. "shut up," he laughed out, still sobbing and tightened his hug around the boy.
"hey, i still need to give you your gift. come on, let's not get sad on this happy day," taehyung said and pulled away from the hug and wiped away jimin's tears, jimin returning the same. he reached out for the present he had kept under the bench and gave it to the birthday boy. it was wrapped in sky blue, jimin's favorite color. he unwrapped the present slowly, making sure not to rip the wrapping paper; a habit he had picked up ever since he was small. taehyung chuckled as to how jimin was treating the present like fragile glass.
a bright smile formed on jimin's lips as he lifted up his gift, a sweater. "you're the best!" jimin said and smiled at taehyung, his eyes turning into crescents. taehyung returned his box-like smile and held his arms out. they both hugged each other again as jimin giggled before lifting his head up and facing taehyung, "thank you, taehyungie." "anything for you," he smiled and cupped jimin's face, "please keep on smiling like that, jimin. you don't know how beautiful your smile is," taehyung said and leaned forward, placing a soft kiss on jimin's forehead. "and don't lose hope either. i'll be with you, always," taehyung gazed at jimin. jimin smiled and nodded, humming in response. "it's almost 6 am now," taehyung said while checking his wristwatch, "let's get you back before the nurses come," he said and held onto jimin's hands before beginning to walk back.
"taehyung?" jimin whispered softly. "hm?" taehyung asked and looked at jimin. "i love you," jimin said and went on his tiptoes before placing a kiss on taehyung's cheek. "i love you too," taehyung responded and placed a kiss on jimin's lips.
