Today I was meant to go to the village school but I plan to go find my father. I can't bear him on his own after what mum did to him. I may not have seen it but I have heard him crying and when I go to comfort him he just told me the whole story, even the reasoning. He would cry hours on end and it just tore me apart.

Trying to get that awful image out of my head I packed for a long trip back to New York. Charlie had walked in on me. She saw me packing and she knew exactly why. She  walked over to me grabbing my arms before I finished packing. "Please wait, you need to know more about this place before leaving, and it's important for you to know of its history." She had said this while grabbing my uniform from the closet. What does she mean it's important for me to know? She is so confusing, one minute she says if I want to leave I can, the next she says I have to stay. She doesn't make sense.

"Get dressed, Barbara and John wouldn't want you to leave early now would they?"She convinced me to stay and in reply to what she said I grabbed my uniform and said "I guess not," while rolling my eyes and giving her a smile "I'll stay but only because I'm curious.". She returned a smile and nodded before leaving the room to let me get dressed.

When I finished getting dressed I looked in the mirror to see a girl who hid behind a fake smile, a girl who lost hope years ago, a girl who lost her only left family member, a girl was always numb since she was born but didn't let anyone know. My mind was either going at 100 miles per hour or completely blank. I felt tears falling over my waterline and sliding down my cheeks. "I lost everything how could I be happy, my life might as well be over." I heard the door creak open. My instincts kicked in making me duck my head out of view from the mirror. "Hey, Samantha? It's Mattie. Are you ready to go?" From his voice, I could tell he was concerned why I wasn't facing him. "Yeah, I'll be down in a minute." I waved him off wanting him to leave as soon as possible before I started crying again.

I know he had left by the door slamming closed. I tried to preoccupy myself by packing my bag (with school stuff), that sat on my bed. I decided to take my art pad, colors, pens and pencils. I wanted to draw instead of getting upset when lessons got boring or at breaks. I packed my bag and made one final check to make sure I had everything before I left my room. I learned to love this room the most, it was a place where I can be upset without hurting anyone else, where I can be myself.

I walked down the stairs really not looking forward to going to school. I was greeted by John, who showed me where my breakfast was. Mattie, Carolann and Charlie sat at the table waiting for me to join them. Barabara had placed a stack of pancakes on to my plate. I normally add loads of maple syrup on the top with a square of butter but I really wasn't in the mood for that today. "So, Samatha... Are you excited for your first day of Grade 8?" I could tell Barbara was trying to break the awkward silence. So I returned a subtle "Yep, super excited." I was still picking at my pancakes wanting everyone to stop staring at me. "Do you not like pancakes, Samantha?" Mattie had obviously noticed my actions. "I do I'm just not hungry, that's all." I answered only a minute after the question was asked. It was true I wasn't hungry but it also reminded me of how my dad used to make them every morning before school and would make me finish my plate before we left the house. I missed him. The way he laughed, the way he smiled and the way he would tell a "joke".

I was taken out of my trance by Carolann asking what I was staring at. I answer with a simple "nothing". I had appeared to be staring blankly at my pancakes with the fork stuck so far in the stack it stood up right without the need of me holding it. I then reluctantly  ate a few of my pancakes to stop them worrying about me.

"Samantha come on we need to go or we'll be late!" shouts Carolann from the front making me hastily grab my bag and run for the door. Upon arriving at the do I said goodbye to John and Barbara before joining the others to make our way to a for of hell called school.
