'Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.'
Proverbs 25:15
So skimming through Proverbs, it was kind of an experience in finding out what life was like at the time they where written. What I love about this book is that it's so straightforward; it's full of simple, important advice, and doesn't over-complicate it. Some of them are quite amusing - the one that comes after this basically says don't eat too much honey or you'll throw up. Well, I'll certainly never forget that piece of wise advice.
But seriously, I picked this Proverb because it talks about having patience, something we don't often think about as Christians (I know I never do). I'm not going to use that unbearable phrase 'patience is a virtue' though. Wow, there could be nothing more patronising. Anyway, I won't rant about it. But what does it mean that through patience and a gentle tongue a ruler can be persuaded and a bone broken?
I guess the idea of patience suggests not rushing into things, and waiting for the opportunity. Now, if there's one thing Christians don't tend to do very well, it's that. And maybe sometimes that's a good thing. Maybe sometimes it's good to push people into doing things, to not wait and be afraid of telling others about God. But, with prayer and his Spirit, we can have the wisdom to know when to wait. Maybe you've introduced a friend to a lot of your faith and belief, and they're slowly shifting to se your perspective. But often, if you push them, it will just make them angry and not want to hear more. You have to make space and time for God to work.
Prayer
Dear Lord,
Thank you that you have set out a plan for my life, and if I trust in you, then I cannot fail. lord, please give me the wisdom to know when to keep going and when to wait. Help me to be patient and watch you move, and know the full extent of your power.
Amen
