'If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won't be honest with greater responsibilities. And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven? And if you are not faithful with other people's things, why should you be trusted with things of your own?'

Luke 16:10-12

I've been praying a lot about today's devotional, and I really felt God tell me to write about this passage. And in it, we are shown yet another way of how to live our lives following in Jesus' footsteps and walking out in faith here on Earth. But it would be pointless for me to just say 'be honest', because I think there's a lot more that we don't even think about but that are really important in showing others who we are and who God is.

Being honest with everything is like a step out in faith. We are going into the unknown, into the deep end of the pool. Why? Because we live in a world where lying and deceit are around every corner. Often we feel that nagging thought in the back of your mind - how can we be sure about this person? How can we trust them? And if we want to show others that we move in love and in peace and gentleness, we have to erase that natural default to lie. We have to prove they can put their faith in us. Then, and only then, can we show them how to put their faith in God.

For the most part, we all forget to be honest in different ways. I think you would know, deep down, what you are not totally true about. Perhaps it's changing things like what you did last weekend to make you sound a bit more interesting and fit-in. There are things like integrity too - I know that for me, almost all the time I don't tell the truth about something because I don't want to hurt my friend, but actually, if we say things in a gentle, loving way and use it to build them up, it is actually much better than not telling them the truth. Then, in future, they can know that you will be honest with them and look to you for advice and wisdom, and you can point them to Jesus.

Prayer

Dear Lord,

Thank you that you have given me the opportunity to step out and share my faith with others. Thank you that you have blessed me with people to talk to and to love. Lord, help me to go deeper. Help me to be a person on honesty and integrity, and to show people to you through that.

Amen
