When he came back, I thought I was done for. I felt his presence when he appeared next to me, and the coolness of a liquid being poured down my throat. The fire inside me roared up, and I could hear myself screaming, twisting in pain. I couldn't open my eyes. Then it slowed, and eventually, stopped. My eyes fluttered open, surprised to see I was alone in the room. My throat was sore from screaming, and I was sweating. The door slowly swung open, and Nico slumped in, holding a wet cloth. When he saw I was awake, he practically cried.
"Will!" He rushed over, falling to his knees next to me and pressing the cloth to my head. I coughed, then smiled gratefully. He pressed his head into my shoulder and cried, his tears soaking the side of my shirt. My arm wrapped around him, and it felt good to be able to do that after so long. When his tears ran dry, he looked up at me and smiled. I sat up and gave him a proper hug, finishing with a well deserved kiss. "Thank you, Nico." I muttered into his hair.
That night, he told me all about his second time in Tartarus. He explained everything in thorough detail, not leaving out a single bit. He ended with "it was worth it," and that made my heart melt.
"Nico," I started.
"Hm?"
"Do you know why we were able to.. you know, communicate like that?"
"Well, I'm not sure.. but I think it was because you were dying."
"I didn't know you could do that."
"Neither did I."
"Let's not ever do it again, okay?"
"Okay."
