I opened my eyes slowly. "So the brave brat is finally awake."
I groan as light hits my eyes, making my head throb. "Shut the dang curtains! She doesn't want light."
The light disappears and I can fully open my eyes. I'm in a hospital-like room. "Where's Jake?" My voice is scratchy.
"He's fine. Of course that is the first thing you worry about. You don't have any questions. Like where are you? What happened? And so on?"
That voice....I recognize it so well. "Kat?"
"Yes. It is me. Kat the wristband talking person who talked while you were in the Trials. I wish you could've just been killed the easy way. But out of the hundreds, no thousands of people, you had to be the one who survives. You had to be the one who lived. You are only the second one ever smart enough to cross over and win. You are at Headquarters. You are in a hospital where they are taking care of some of your more serious aliments that you received while passing trials. You have a couple head injuries, some problems from you eating less than normal even though you didn't eat much to begin with, dehydration, and some other things." She shrugs at me and I can finally get a better view of her.
She is wearing a pearl necklace with matching earrings. Her blonde hair is swirled up on her head in a bun. She has a lawyer look about her. I only know what a lawyer is from what my mother told me. But this is the kind of lawyer who'd be going for the bad guy. She has green eyes that are sharp and pointed with long eyelashes.
"What about Jake?"
"Jake has...several injuries. That punch knocked him out and made him bleed. He was also suffering a couple other things before we even stuck him in there for the years we put him in there. His mother was definitely screwed on the head, I mean, beating her own child. Such a shame we had to put her through the Trials too. She died instantly. The struggle of nature killed her off."
I remember I have seen the bruises on Jake. But when I asked he just said that they were from falling or being a klutz. I can't believe his mother was so mean, so rude. "I need to see Jake. Now."
I try to stand up then find these tubes hooked to me. "No. DO NOT even try. He needs rest."
"No. I need him. I miss him. He's the only one I trust in this whole place. I'd feel much more comfortable if I could see him and everything." I whisper.
"I cannot. I do not have the right papers to ev-hold on a minute." She touches her ear and starts saying yes. Over and over again. "Okay it looks like the President says you are allowed to have credibility to pretty much everything you ask for. Why, I don't know. She just says so. And the President's word goes."
I stand up, pulling the tubes out of my arm. "You were supposed to leave those in-ugh whatever. Just follow me." She says, turning on her heel. She's wearing these dumb red heels. I hate them.
I follow after her, down the hallway. She stops in front of the room. "Go in. I don't even have authority to go in. Just go. I can't believe you can even go in."
I turn the knob, taking a deep breath. I creak it open and instantly am greeted with a Blonde. She has a snarl on her face. "Can I help you?" She growls.
"No. I am here to see Jake."
"No one is allowed to see him."
"Then you shouldn't be in there, should you?"
"I'm a nurse. I'm taking care of him." She hisses.
"Well I saved him from death so you can get out of my way before I make you get out of my way." I take threatening step forward.
"Why I oughta just kil-"
"Hello Nurse Zip, this is Acid. She has authority to see Jake...from the President." Kat appears at my side.
"Oh my! I am so so sorry Kat! I didn't realize...I apologize to Miss Acid too."
She comes out of the room, still sending me a dirty look. Kat ushers me in, closing the door behind me. I hit the door and growl. She locked it from the outside.
"Smart Girl?" A muddy voice calls.
"Jake?" I whip around.
He has something over his mouth but I can still see his beautiful baby blue and forest green eyes. Purple hair is everywhere. He seems a little happier though. "Jake!" I say, running over to him.
I sit on the chair next to his bed, pulling it right up to the side of his bed. I take his hand in mine, feeling like I need to. I don't know why. He just feels like he needs to be comforted. "Smart Girl, you are alive. I thought they mighta killed you. They wouldn't let me see you, even if I asked."
"The President told them to let me see you. I just thought he might've killed you when he punched you."
"That wouldn't have been a good thing now would it?" He pulls down the cloth covering his jaw and smiles.
"Doesn't it hurt?"
"What?"
"To smile. It looks like you are in pain." I grimace.
"Oh, a little. But it's worth it if I can keep smiling at you." I can see his attempt at a smirk.
"You are such a dork. But you are a cute dork." I smile.
"I know."
"You have such a big ego. It's ridiculous."
"It's ridiculous how beautiful you are."
"Stop it!"
"Only when you stop being so pretty."
"I mean it."
"As do I my beauty."
I groan and he laughs. Then he coughs. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Tell you what?"
"That your mom-"
"I didn't want to weigh you down with something like that. I am completely fine. She just was a little messed but I still loved her. And I didn't want to do anything to my own mother that could cause her to be Gone. But she is. Now she is. I don't have to worry nor care about her anymore." I grip his hand tighter.
"She may not be here for you anymore, but I am. And I won't leave."
