She went to the admittance office to receive her schedule. They greeted her politely, giving her their condolences. It seemed most of the college staff had known the cute boy with the freckles that clung to Alex like a leach.

"Its hard, losing your soulmate."

That was the most common thing they'd say. And she'd nod politely, thank them, and walk away.

What else was she supposed to say?

When she finally returned to the dorm room, Jefferson was fast asleep. His thick glasses that she'd never seen him wear before were crushing into his sleeping face. He looked less annoying when asleep. She huffed, frowning. She removed them carefully, without touching him, and sat them on his desk.

She then crawled into bed, curling under Laurens' old Looney Tunes blanket. Nightmares of pretty freckles and a big smile awaited her as sleep overtook her body.

When she awoke, it was 7:13 am. Her first class was at 8. Historical Government, Year II, Professor Washington. She smiled at that name, eager to be the teachers pet all over again.

Jefferson was already awake, making coffee with a coffee machine he must have brought in. He looked at her, eyes narrowed.

"You snore." he said finally, after an intense staring match. Alex scoffed.

"I can't even sleep now?" she snapped, going back to her schedule. Jefferson rolled his eyes. He jutted his chin at the picture of her and Laurens'.

"Why aren't you at your meant to be's apartment?" he sneered, taking a drink of his coffee. Alex looked up, eyes wide and full of rage.

"He isn't my soulmate." she snapped, her tone oozing with disgust at that word.

Jefferson raised an eyebrow. "You sure? You two always seem to be together."

Alex huffed, looking up again.

"Can you go do your fucking hair and leave me alone? I will be sleeping here, thank you. Sorry if that ruins your plans of barebacking with Madison all year." she snapped, voice sharp. Jefferson nearly choked on his coffee.

"Madison? He's just my best friend!" he protested, gripping his 'Viva La France!' mug. Alex snorted.

"You guys are always hanging off of each other. I'm sure you're 'just best friends'. I'm sure everything is platonic when you and your Jemmy James do whatever the hell it is you do in Monticello." she stated, eyes unwavering. Jefferson shook his head, not replying. He finished his coffee and went to brush his teeth. There was a knock.

When Alex opened it, of course, it was James Madison. She rolled her eyes and moved to let him in. James walked in, eyes wide.

"Thomas! I have Washington, Historical Government, 8 am!" he exclaimed. Jefferson grinned mischievously, high fiving him, as Alex's stomach flipped. They all had the same class.

"I missed you all summer man. I've been traveling the South alone. Where have you been?" Madison asked, his tone slightly needy. Alex rolled her eyes.

"Um, France?" Jefferson replied as if this was obvious, making Alex groan and fall back into her bed. They glanced at her.

"What's wrong with you?" Jefferson sneered, pulling off his sweatpants to put on his jeans. She didn't even look amused at his macaroni boxers.

"You're disgusting. You rich people disgust me. I stayed home working a job, while you were off getting high with the French!" she said, eyes narrowed. Jefferson snorted, finishing getting ready. He gave his hair one last fluff.

"You're cute when you're mad, darlin." he drawled in that southern accent of his. She rolled her eyes as he and Madison left laughing.

She hurried and dressed in her ragged ripped jeans, Laurens' hoodie and put her greasy hair in a bun. She didn't have time for contacts, so she put on her glasses, which she hated. They looked like Harry Potter glasses, as Laurens had once informed her. She had to RUN to class, and she barely made it there on time. Jefferson met her eyes for a second before she sat down rows in front of him.

Washington entered the room, making everyone go silent.

"Here comes the generAL!" Samuel Seabury called, making everyone laugh. Washington gave a wry smile.

"Good morning, everyone. Lets see what you all remember from last year with a little pop quiz!" he announced, voice booming. Everyone groaned. Alex, however, looked excited.

She had hers done in a matter of 13 seconds, (she timed it). She turned it in, just as Jefferson did. She smirked, sashaying back to her seat.

Once everyone had finished, Washington announce Alex and Jefferson to have perfect scores. Everyone rolled their eyes and went on with the lesson. Jefferson winked at Alex, making her scowl.

Something never changed.

Alex threw herself into her schooling and her job, rarely sleeping or eating. She found that the absence of Laurens didn't hurt quite so bad when she didn't give herself time to think about it.

This went on for three months, until finally Lafayette forced her to come out with him one Friday night.

// hmm. that is all.
