Days passed, weeks too. As promised, Evan texted daily but we only met once in two weeks. I felt guilty for troubling him in between of his schedule to send a stupid text to me.
About work, "Finish 'em up" was my welcome statement and a pile of papers was my welcome gift. Claire's been really friendly to me and we figured out we should hang out more often. The work's growing on me but waking up early isn't.Dad's reaction when I held my first salary was, "It's not a lot, but it's something." And he would pat on my shoulder to show how proud he was of me. I wonder how this word something effects our lives. It gives us hope, that we have something to look forward to rather than being aimless. That we have something to earn for, rather than ruining our lives. And that I have something left to do, and that's my assignment. Funny, I know.
"Did you get the news?" Asked Claire as she pushed open my cabin's door and started swinging on in, her upper body on the inside and legs outside and head popped in.
"No I forgot to read the newspape-"
"Not that news silly, Evan Marshall took control over Cover and is going to be here in place of Dimpsey!"
"What?" I kept my mouth open until she nodded and left the room with a grin.
I was excited and also nervous about him being here everyday, watching me. I think this is what he meant when he said if we could meet daily.
In 2 hours between Clair's departure and Evan's arrival, I went to the bathroom to look at myself thrice. What a mess I was, No make up just nude lipstick and half done hair. I was shook when the door suddenly opened and Claire told me that he was here.
All the company members were gathered in the huge main woking area, they were standing in groups but I only had Claire by my side. Just after low whisperings, followed a wave of silence when Mr. Dempsey arrived, With Evan following him and both giggling.
"So my dear friends, and my dear workers-" Dempsey started, I mean..Mr. Dimpsey, The Claire Effect I can say. But I wasn't paying attention to his words, I was looking for Evan's eyes to meet mine. He was wearing a simple black shirt with sleeves rolled up and a red tie, a dangerous combination for a man like him.
It took only a few seconds for his eyes to match my gaze and he gave out a smile. I couldn't help but blush and look away.
"Is there something going on in here? Nova I can really see it." Claire punched me on the arm and smiled teasingly at me. Maybe she saw him smiling at me or me blushing which made it obvious right?
"I just know him, that's it." I shrugged.
"Ok.....I'm not quit convinced but it's ok for now."
I exhaled the breath I was holding and looked back at Evan, and he was still looking at me, so I smiled confidently this time."Like Nova!" I was confused what was happening when Mr. Dempsey called out my name "It was really nice knowing a lady like you. Young, beautiful, ambitious, funny and a friendly worker." Everyone looked back at me and I smiled at him, and mouthed the words 'Thank You' for his compliments. "Maybe I'll see you people again if young Evan changes his mood about the company." And everyone laughed.
Evan too was smiling but his smile was half for Dempsey and half for me. Everyone walked towards Dempsey to give him a hug or a handshake, and to congratulate Evan.
Just before it was my turn to go ahead and say goodbye to Mr. Dimpsey. He motioned towards his cabin and put his hand over his forehead like he forgot something important.
"And people! Just before I go, there's this last interview I took or the last member of the company that I appointed on Mr. Phil Marshall's recommendation and he's here so you all can welcome him too." All of us looked at each other and then at the door.
As Mr. Dempsey moved back to his place, a figure walked in from the door behind him. A similar figure.
"Mike."
