Mike walked in behind him and stood in front of us.
"Hello! I'm Mike." He said with a similar voice. He was the one that Kelly made me meet. I was trying to go back and hide in the crowd because though we agreed to be friends, I felt that I let him down and he won't ever want to see me again but as it was my turn to greet Mr. Dempsey when he left, I was the first one to be noticed in the crowd. He was taking a look at the people when he recognised my face. And smiled awkwardly, but it was a friendly one and I too smiled at him to.
"Good bye Mr. Dempsey! We will surely miss you." I said and moved on to Evan's side.
I was supposed to shake his hand and congratulate him but instead I just gave out a smirk and thought about playing a little game."Mr. Evan. What made you change your mind about being here? We will miss Mr. Dempsey." And made a sad face. Evan played along.
"You know Miss Nova. If you want something permanent in your life, then you have to make slight changes in your routine for it." He held his hand out and it met mine. He was as soft as he ever was, like an ice-cream. But our little handshake couldn't last long when Claire coughed from behind me and I knew what it meant.
"Well congratulations for that permanent thing, Mr. Evan."
---
The farewell didn't last too long. Evan was in his place in the office just behind a wall from mine and Dempsey was gone too.
"Miss Markey. Mr. Evan wants you in the office right now please." His secretory called out. She was 50 maybe as she looked like she was Evan's mother.
Exhausted from the days work I made my way to his office and brushed my clothes before entering."Mr. Evan?" I asked for his permission befor entering his office which was undoubtfully empty except for this godly human being sitting on his chair like James Bond.
"Oh Nova. Please have a seat."
I closed the door behind me at sat right in front of him with for some reason, nervousness on my face.
"I wanted to ask you.." He looked at me from my hair to my dress. I wore a purple dress with boots that day and I waited for him to say something after that. "Are you on drugs?"
"What?"
"Look at yourself in the mirror."
I looked in the mirror just in the corner and a found out that I looked like a homeless girl just with a decent dress. My hair were messy because I have a habit of touching them or playing with them while I'm thinking or working.
"No it's just because of the work." I answered casually.
"And you're still so beautiful." He leaned back on his chair and I rolled my eyes with a smile.
"I can see you daily now." He said somewhere between staring at me and smiling. "But please don't get distracted ok? I'll feel guity." He leaned back again and stated teasingly.
"Nothing to be distracted by, sir." That was my easiest comeback. And with confidence.
"I see. You know I'm half way through the book that you gave me. Where Violet lashes on Finch and then he just goes away." He was playing with the paper weight on the table. "But I don't want to finish it. I don't want to leave the place that it takes me to, I don't want it to end." There was suddenly deepness in his voice.
"I know right. That's what it feels like, you want to reach to the end of the book but you don't want it to end either."
"Yeah right. I want to complete it. I want to know what happens."
"You can only read the rest of it. If I tell you what happens then it wouldn't be fair to the book. I suggest you read the whole thing. It doesn't just ends, but it starts your imagination, and I know how painful it is to end a good book." I smiled at him in condolence and he returned it gratefully.
"You didn't tell me you were coming here." I suddenly asked remembering that I had this question in mind.
"I wanted to surprise you. Tell me, were you excited when you heard that I was doing this?"
"Well...not much. But yeah, surprised." I smiled at him and the smile on his face grew wider.
"What would I do without you." He pointed at me and we both started laughing.
"I have work to do Evan. See you later?" I asked as I stood up from my seat. Knowing that I was allowed to do that when its with Evan.
"Of course, whenever you want my lady. Actually, tomorrow's Sunday right? How about I we go to the lake?" He was excited like a child and I couldn't kill that vibe seeing how innocent he was looking. And also I tried to ignore the butterflies inside me when he called out 'My lady'.
"Ok, but don't make that face again. You ain't innocent, I know that." And I left for the door and opened it. Before leavinig, I looked back at him and he was still staring. Why god!? Why a lot of staring??
"By the way Mr. Evan." I turned the knob of the door lightly. "You don't pay me enough to have a drug problem." And with that I left his cabin and I could feel him smiling behind me.
I was in my own world when I dumped into someone, was thankful that I didn't fall.
"Slow down Nova." Mike said with a smile and a shine in his eyes.
"I'm sorry."
"It's fine." We just stood there for a few seconds awkwardly when I was avoiding eye contact with him.
"Well, you didn't seem happy when I arrived." He looked at the ground. "You know I really agree to be just friends, but the ones who don't feel awkward around each other. And trust me I didn't know you were also working here."
"I know, I'm sorry you felt that way. We are friends." And I smiled. I was happy that I didn't have to pretend much in front of him now.
"So is it Evan?"
"What?" I asked.
"The way you were looking at him, I could tell he's the 'someone' that you were talking about." He had some papers in his hand and was playing with them the whole time he spoke.
"Is it that obvious?"
"Well, maybe for me. But don't worry, I don't mind. I'm happy for you and happy that I'll have you as a friend...I need to get this done so see you later ok."
He walked past me after I nodded and into Claire's cabin, she had a small one. But what work does he have with Claire? Maybe she is incharge of giving tours to new bees.Enough Nova, you have a deadline. Do your work and live your life. You have a lot..no.something..to look forward to.
