Prologue

It was four o'clock when I heard the soft crash of a net on the blue sparkling ocean surrounding Marina Bay. Small ripples of sound travelled downwards, echoing off the sea corals and anemone surrounding our resting place. They swayed as the moon pulled them upwards in a sort of exhaltation...

"Foolish mortal..."

Larissa sighed as her eyes shifted from hazel to a light hypnotic sky blue. Indeed this mortal was foolish for trespassing. We slowly glided upwards towards the mechanical vessel that housed the perpetrator. It was a full moon and the howls of wolves echoed over the surrounding cliffs, their cries of pain? sorrow? emptiness ?

I ignored them, those creatures were no good ....

Our unblemished skin sparkled as we broke the surface, our upper halves cloaked in seaweed with our hair caressing the globes of flesh that formed our breasts. My locks had never held the glow that Larissa's did; golden, majestic, angelic, like a sunrise creeping over the wide expanse of blue mystery... Blue darkness. Mine was ink black with pearls beaded in and left to fuse with the strands from infancy.... Another thing that set me apart ....

The man sat in the boat smiling to himself as he held the small golden locket intricately decorated with a wolf's howling form. He closed it and sighed, his chocolate brown hair shifting slightly as green embers dashed up at the nest of stars above.Larissa began her siren's call, smirking at me as his eyes shuttered, losing its focus on the Big Dipper.

Suddenly the urge to save this man came over me and I grabbed Larissa's arm, stopping her from proceeding with the hypnosis.

" I sensed him first, so he's mine."

The words left my mouth before I could think, and to say she was surprised was an understatement. Her pink, plump lips closed into a tight smile that didn't reach her eyes as she bowed in respect.

Releasing my grip I signalled for her to leave as I always did when I chose my prey.

"Then there were two..."

The low, scratchy, deep voice of the perpetrator caught me off guard. He'd woken out of the trance and now blatantly stared at me from the small cracks of his half-closed eyelids.

"I know what happens next, and I'd hate to stop you from continuing."

I remained silent as he sighed suddenly shooting up, rocking the boat with the sudden force, thrusting him into the ocean. I swam to his side observing his movements... He knew he'd die if he entered this territory without consent, yet he did. Why did he do that ? No mortal ever did... Unless...

"Yes dear, that's what I want..."

"You do know the likelihood of your survival is one in a billion?"

His eyes flickered when I questioned him. Lust, sadness, guilt, hope - they all flashed through his green eyes as he smiled uncertainly.

"I know... But.., it's worth a shot. Plus, wouldn't you like someone to hear your entire song ?"

He climbed back into the boat; soaking wet with his brown curls matted against his forehead and blue shirt stuck to the white vest underneath.

"I've lost someone who can't be replaced ... Who l don't want to live without.... Not with those men around anyways ..."

His plight was pitiful ... Gruesomely pitiful ... But it fueled my hunger, sparked a newborn fire to taste, to caress mortal flesh. As he went on describing his enchantress i began my soft hum, swaying the boat with my scaly fins.

He hadn't noticed when he'd been consumed by the song, too distracted by the firey redhead that had left him a week prior to their wedding. My fingers grazed the outline of his jade orbs. I slowly pulled him into the wondrous fluid of indigo. With my song he didn't stand a chance...
