November 1975
"I want to go with you and mommy!" Sara's face is red tears rolling down her cheeks as Stevie and I sit with her in Robin's living room. "We'll be back before Christmas sweet pea, and we'll call you and Nova every night" the gut wrenching reality of leaving our kids to go on the road is finally sinking in with us, we've got a plane to catch in ninety minutes, and my baby girl is throwing a fit. I don't blame her, I'll miss her and Nova badly. Stevie's doing her best to hold it together, she's on the verge of tears herself.
"It's not fair-you're gonna miss Thanksgiving..." deciding I have to be firm I kneel down in front of my daughter taking her hands "Sara, mommy and I have to go to work. You have to be a big girl for aunt Robin okay? Ginny will be here with you, and Grammy and Gramps and nana Ruth will all come take you to stay with them too." She looks off to the side sniffling, clearly not placated with my answer.
"Sara, look at me-" she turns her head reluctantly her tear filled eyes catching mine "It's only for a few weeks, we'll be back before Christmas so we can take you to see Santa. I want you to be a good girl until then okay? No fussing, no arguing about bedtime, and eat everything on your plate. You don't want Santa to skip our house this year do you?" she shakes her head slowly and I wipe tears from her face "Daddy's right baby, you're a big girl now. You have to be a good big sister and set a good example for Nova." she nods wiping her face with the back of her hand.
"I'll miss you" She says softly, my heart melts and I feel tears stinging my eyes. I lift her up in my arms and Stevie stands next to us rubbing her back in soothing circles. "Mommy and me are going to miss you too. Bunches and bunches" she grabs my nose and I press my forehead to hers "It'll go by so quick you won't even notice sweet pea" Stevie and I both kiss her chubby cheeks and she lays her head on my shoulder "That's mommy's sweet pea. You're a sweetie do you know that?" she smiles shyly, nodding as Stevie smooths her hand over her arm.
Robin holds Nova and we both smother him with kisses, he makes cooing noises at us. He's already five months old, and growing by the day. "You have the number to his pediatrician right?" Robin nods "And you have the right formula written down?" she nods again "What about his list of foods-" Rolling her eyes dramatically Robin sighs "I've got the whole manifest Steph. Jeez you're such a spaz, I've watched them before. We're gonna have lots of fun aren't we munchkin?" Sara nods smiling.
"See? No worries" fidgeting Stevie nods reluctantly "What about Sara's stuffed bear? Honey did we leave Mauricio at home?" Sara shakes her head "He's in my backpack mommy" I kiss her curls smiling at Stevie "Rob's right sweetheart you're spazing" sighing she wrings her hands nervously "Okay...okay lets get going." Sara hugs my neck tighter as we head to the front door. As soon as we're outside at the cab, she starts to tear up again but doesn't say anything. Ginny, follows us sitting on the driveway as I put Sara down. She sits up on her back legs and I scratch her chin "See you later girl" Stevie bends down baby talking to her as she scratches her head.
Robin, Sara, Ginny and Nova look on as I open the door for Stevie, heading to the other side of the car "I see a flash of movement and Sara launches herself at me "I love you daddy! I love you mommy!" I hiccup, holding her tightly Stevie grabs hold from the other side tears coming down her face "Oh, Sara-" she starts humming and I follow along "Wait a minute baby, stay with me a while. Said you'd give me light but you never told me bout the fire. Drowning, in a sea of love. Where everyone would love to drown..." my voice breaks and Sara picks up where I left off "But now its gone, it doesn't matter what for. When you build your house then call me home."
I'm a twenty-five year old self described manly man...but I'm having trouble holding back my emotions as my little girl and her mother sing together. Robin finally takes her hand and they walk back to the porch the two of us waving goodbye again out of the cab window. The car pitches forward and we head down the driveway slowly, leaving our house and our kids and our dog behind for the long and unpredictable perils of the road.
