Before I realized what I had said, it was too late. The words had already been blurted out of my mouth.

"Kiss me then."

I see Vera's facial expression change into something I couldn't quite describe, however, there was one clear emotion present and it was confusion. The playful mood that was there before was gone and I had come to the conclusion that I screwed up again.

"I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking," ashamed that the idea even came to my mind as we had just met. Vera shifted in her position, awkwardly.

"We should head back, it's getting late," clearly fibbing as the sun was just beginning to set. I just went with it and nodded.

The walk back was bitterly solemn. As I was opening the door to the warehouse, she grabbed my wrist gently.

"Did you mean it? Did you really want to kiss me?" her voice was quiet.

I thought it over for a minute. Perhaps I did, perhaps I didn't but either way I wasn't going to say I did.

"No, it was just banter," I replied nonchalantly with a cold edge to my voice. I turned away from her and opened the door, as I started to advance towards the stairs, I hear her mutter something under her breath.

"And the walls come back up."

A few days passed and the only conversations between Vera and I were vague with no depth.

I didn't speak to her purely out of my own selfishness and she didn't to me out of hers.

I didn't want to become too close with someone out of the fear they would become a weakness, and the exchange we had at the pier revealed to me that I was indeed getting too attached. Although it felt nice to have my solitude back, I couldn't help but miss our blithesome chats and the company of someone. Tyler and I would have occasional conversations, but they weren't as fluent as Vera and I's.

It was around 1am right now. I can hear Vera sleeping beside me. I was in a strange adventurous mood right now and decided to do the unthinkable.

I shook her shoulder gently, causing her to open one eye. She was slightly disoriented from her slumber as she managed to mumble what sounded like a "yeah".

"Get up and get dressed."

She just blinked, "Why? It's like 2am."

"It's 1am," I teased her and she huffed. Without any further arguments, she grabbed some clothing pieces I had bought for her.

"Better be worth it," she half mumbled and half joked as she closed the bathroom door.

Her messy bun flopped as she turned her head to look out the car window.

"Where are we going?" We were in the car and she was slightly more awake now. I've been driving for a few minutes now.

"Somewhere to make up for the mishap." Vera seemed a bit excited and might I say, happiness was a good look on her. We pulled up at a grassy looking area a few moments later and her eyebrows raised.

"There's nothing here. Is this a prank?" she teasingly says.

"There's nothing here, but there is something there," pointing at the sky. Dozens of stars littered the sky, glimmering from the endless black void. The polar specks were like flickering pinpricks on a cloak of darkness. They were beacons of hope for the lost souls of the world, including the two staring up at them. I glanced over at Vera and saw that she had laid down on the grass. I laid down next to her, warmth radiating off her small body.

"How did you know I love stargazing?" her eyes never leaving the beautiful scene above us.

"Two Truths and One Lie, remember?" I can see the hint of a smile on her lips and we both settled in the comfortable silence.

"I'm sorry for snapping at you a few days ago," I sincerely apologized, and shockingly, she returns one.

"I'm sorry for freezing up and acting all stiff," she says slightly embarrassed. I chuckle at her innocence and I grasp her hand. Our fingers intertwine with each other and it felt like things were finally back to the way they were.

"Do you think my mom's one of the stars up there?"

"Definitely. She's watching over you," I point to the largest and brightest star, "I bet that one's her." Vera lightly laughs and a shy smile appears on her face.

"I bet it is."
