I was in the middle of transferring my thoughts onto paper when a mellifluous voice snapped me back into the harsh reality.
"Jon?"
My eyes darted up to meet the silhouette of the beautiful girl who I was madly in love with, and her bright eyes burned into mine.
Rich hickory colored irises gazed at me, a mixture of emotions within them. She quickly looked down at the floor as if in shame.
"I'm sorry."
I was speechless. The apology didn't matter to me in the spur of the moment, or anything for that matter.
The only thing I could focus on was her.
I stumbled out of my seat and quickly embraced her, inhaling her redolent aura. The crisp scent of jasmine and passionfruit filled my senses and I hugged her tighter.
"I'm sorry for leaving, Vera. I should've understood."
I felt a smile against my shoulder and she ran her fingers through my long hair. We swayed in the position for a few more seconds before she spoke again.
"You need to get a haircut soon," she giggled, to which I chuckled at.
"Are you sure you're alright? I was worried. You disappeared for like an hour," I peered at her face for any signs and she gave me a gentle toothy grin.
"I'm good. I'm sorry for snapping. David just meant a lot to me and I felt overwhelmed," she apologized once more. My heart raced at the thought of our relationship being mended and I eagerly nodded.
God, what was this girl doing to me?
The room was filled with serenity and crickets chirped in the distance. She laid her head against my chest in the dimly lit room.
Almost nothing was in sight but my other senses were heightened. The sounds of our heartbeats were faintly heard, and the smell of Vera's fragrance only made mine beat faster.
"Do you think we'll find Fong?" she muttered and traced her delicate fingers along my collarbones, causing goosebumps to rise on my arms.
"Luke said Brock's tracking him down. We'll find him, but for now, try to let calm down," I kissed her forehead.
"You'll make it through this, just like you have for the other difficult periods in your life."
She hummed in response.
"Lemongrass?" I hesitantly asked, wanting to check in if she was alright.
"Lemongrass."
I woke up on my own mattress, the familiar feeling and ambience filling me. I raised my arms to stretch, only to realize the weight of another presence on my left arm.
Looking down, Vera's peaceful face peered up at me—her eyes were shut and cheeks rosy from slumber. She was wearing one of my old shirts as they were the only ones which weren't excessively large for her.
Her chest rose up and down with each slow breath she took, the azure colored t-shirt adorning her body was crinkled slightly— possibly from her tossing and turning throughout the night.
The windows in my room were wide open, a slight breeze brushing against my bare legs every so often. The room was brightly lit, a stark contrast to the murky darkness from last night, and dust particles basked in the sunlight dancing along my skin.
The sound of sizzling downstairs and faint smell of bacon hinted my mother was making breakfast.
Vera started to shift in my arms and I froze, attempting not to make any movements which would bring her out of her peaceful rest. I wanted to feel her warmth for a little longer. To my slight disappointment, her eyes fluttered open and her face broke out into a small smile.
"Morning, Sleeping Beauty."
The little nickname and her breathy morning voice caused my stomach to erupt in butterflies.
"I think I should be the one calling you that," I teased and she shoved my chest lightly. She let out a yawn as she started to rise from my arms. Being the clingy boyfriend I was, decided to grab her waist before she could fully get up—she yelped in surprise as she fell back down. Her weight crushed onto my hip and small pain flashed through me, but I didn't care.
"You're not leaving yet," I snuggled my face into her hair and she merely laughed at my childishness.
"Jon," she stretched out the vowel in a sing-song manner, "I have to brush my teeth." I continued to shake my head, tightening my grip as she struggled even more.
"Please Jon," she pleaded in a lighthearted tone and I waved my fingers in front of her face before jabbing them into her sides. She immediately erupted into uncontrollable laughter.
"J-Jon, not t-this again." I smirked.
"I'll stop if you stay in bed for a few more minutes," I whispered into her ear as she stuck her tongue out at me.
"You'll never get to me," she continued giggling hysterically.
"Challenge accepted."
I began tickling her more aggressively and her laughs became louder. Her face was now a pink color and tears escaped her eyes, as she attempted to pry herself out of my grip.
Our little session was interrupted when my mother knocked on our door.
"You guys better not be up to any monkey business in there," her voice rung from behind the door and Vera breathed out a sigh of relief for her knight in shining armor.
"Breakfast is ready. Be down in 10 minutes or else," she jokingly threatened and the brunette in front of me perked up at the mention of nourishments.
Vera finally managed to succeed in departing from the bed and started to pad her way into the bathroom. I managed to catch a glimpse of her tangled hair and even more crinkled shirt before she shut the door.
"I have something planned for today. I hope six o'clock is a good time for you."
