"Why'd you help me?"

She could've easily let me bleed out, but she still didn't hesitate to show compassion.

"Because you needed help?" She looked at me as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

"Didn't you come all this way to kill me?"

She hummed and licked her lips.

"I did."

She paused.

"But a little sympathy doesn't hurt, mm?" She looked at me before continuing, "Just returning a favor. Think of this as a thank you for last night." I nodded coldly, I was idiotic for thinking otherwise.

She got up from the mattress and went to return the materials while I was left alone to my thoughts.

"So Nicholas Sparks, eh?" she grinned at me

"So Nicholas Sparks, eh?" she grinned at me. We were perched on her mattress that I had just brought in from another room.

That's embarrassing.

I cleared my throat, "I don't know what you're talking about." She holds up my book and I feel my ears redden.

"Aw is little Jonathon blushing," she says pinching my cheeks and I catch a whiff of her floral perfume. Her face was dangerously close to mine, allowing me to observe every little detail of her. She had wiped off her makeup and she looked gorgeous. However, my mind was telling me it was wrong to think of her in that way.

Show her who's the tough one, don't let her think you're weak. You've been too soft these past few days.

"Get your hands off me," I growled at her. I regretted it as soon as I saw the look on her face. It was no longer bright and the sense of happiness and comfort that was there before had quickly disintegrated.

She mutters an apology and declares that she is going to use the bathroom.

"W-wait I didn't mean it," I tried to recover the moment we had but it was too late. She had already left the room.

"Please don't leave me alone," I whispered.

We went to sleep that night in utter silence

We went to sleep that night in utter silence. No small talk, no goodnights, nothing.

I was used to being alone but this time felt completely different.

"Vera?"

I hear a hum from the mattress adjacent to mine.

"I'm sorry about before, I didn't mean it. I just thought I was getting too comfortable with you. The feeling just felt foreign."

Silence.

"What feeling?"

"The feeling of having someone care for me, I suppose. I haven't felt that in a while. It's so strange yet I crave it so much," I admitted.

Vera laughed.

"You truly are such a selcouth little thing."

"Such big vocabulary for such a small girl," I teased. I feel the mattress shift and I felt a light thump on my shoulder.

"How's your wound? Feel better?"

"Much better. Thank you, by the way. I never thanked you for helping me," I bashfully said. Vera turns around and looks at me. Her ebony colored eyes pierced into mine and her face broke out into a smile.

"Just go to sleep, you big red nerd," she giggled.

"Goodnight Vera."

"Goodnight Jon."

I smiled at the nickname.

Jon. I like that.
